Dr. Joyce Ilson

I was invited to the Bloomberg inauguration, since I had been a Bloomberg volunteer, and there I met an old friend from 30 years ago, Dr. Joyce Ilson. Dr. Ilson was one of the last people to speak to Charles Weldon before he died tragically in 1993. Charles Weldon was a famous chess player and a Professor of Computer Science at CUNY who went to Yugoslavia for a chess tournament.

Weldon did well in the tournament but got sick shortly after the tournament was over. He had appendicitis and his appendix was removed. However, there were complications in the surgery and he suddenly died of peridonitis. Had he been treated in America he would without doubt have survived.

One of the last calls he made before he died was to Dr. Joyce Ilson.
