Thomas Corbin WOODSON was born in 1790 in Virginia. He died in 1879 in Cemetery, Jackson County, Roads, Ohio. He married Jemima PRICE in 1806.
The oral tradition of the Woodson Family is that Tom Woodson was the son of Thomas Jefferson. However, the letters and the Farm Book of Thomas Jefferson make no mention of Sally Hemings or any other of his slaves having a son named Tom. Thus, it appears that the oral tradition is not correct. In addition, recent DNA testing has confirmed that Thomas Jefferson was not the father of Tom Woodson.
Also, Tom Woodson was probably much older. By 1806 he was living in what is now Greenbriar, West Virginia and was a free man and a tax-paying property owner with a wife named Jemima and a child. Therefore, the birthdate of 1790 is probably not correct. He was probably about ten years older than that.
Dr. Eugene Foster wrote:
We tested five men who were descended from two of Thomas Woodson's sons. They were descendants of James Woodson and Lewis Woodson. Four of those five matched exactly with each other. One didn't even look at all like it. We interpret that as meaning that, somewhere along the line, there was either adoption or illegitimacy. So we're confident that we have the Y chromosome of that male line.
Now we are in the process of looking at one more Woodson, who is a descendant of William Woodson, a third son, on the outside chance that it might match with the Jefferson or might not match with these other two. We do think it's unlikely.

Dear Sam,
I have been looking through your web pages on the genealogies of Thomas Jefferson and other famous Americans, with particular interest concerning my direct paternal ancestor, William Bradford, Governor of the Plymouth Colony. There appear to be a few mistakes.
First, Governor William Bradford was never the "Governor of Massachusetts". He was the 2nd Governor of the Plymouth Colony, elected first in 1621, and served in that post for many years. There was no such place as Massachusetts then.
Second. You have attributed 7 children to Gov. Bradford and Alice Carpenter. They had only 3 children, (Maj.) William, Mercy, and Joseph. Gov. Bradford had one earlier child, John Bradford, by his first wife, Dorothy May, and Alice Carpenter had two children by her previous husband Edward Southworth. They were name Constant Southworth and Thomas Southworth. She was known as Alice (Carpenter) Southworth when she remarried Gov. Bradford after Edward Southworth died.
Gov. Bradford could not possibly have fathered a child (Ephraim) in 1615 in Austerfield, because he was in Holland at that time (1609-1620)
Third, You have a younger sister to Gov. Bradford named Margaret Bradford being born in 1595, three years after their mutual father died). His sisters were named Alice and Margaret, and Margaret was born before he was and died when she only a few days old. Bradford's mother remarried Robert Briggs after her husband died when Gov. Bradford was less than two years old. She then had two children by Briggs, but none named Margaret.
The genealogy of Governor Bradford of the Plymouth Colony well known, and I hope you will correct your web pages. Please see: http://www.concentric.net/~pvb/GEN/govbrad.html
Thank you for your attention to this matter.

pvb@concentric.netDear Mr. Bradford,
Thank you for your letter.
The Genealogy I posted of William Bradford comes directly from the LDS Website. (You probably knew that already.) You can find it yourself by going to http://www.familysearch.org/ and clicking under Ancestral File and then inserting the file number the LDS has assigned to William Bradford, which is 4LBC-XQ , and searching.
You really should contact them (except that I imagine that you have done so already) as many more people read their website than read mine.
I will try to make the corrections you have indicated and post them.
I got into this because some famous person, I cannot remember who but it may have been John Kerry, claimed to be a descendant of William Bradford.
After I have posted my corrections, you may contact me again if there is still something wrong.

To: Sam Sloan <samsloan@samsloan.com>Sam,
Thanks for your reply.
There are some significant problems in working with LDS files. As much
as I appreciate their efforts, they do not confirm any of their reports
with valid records. They rely entirely upon what people send them and
for notables this can be a particularly knotty problem because there
are lots of people, many well intended, who send them incorrect
information. The LDS does maintain reference files that relate their
data back to the person who sent in the information, so one can pick
through the data to find correct information by closely examining the
sources. So, generally speaking, the LDS files will contain the correct
list of a certain notable's children but may also include a lot of
extraneous and mistaken information as well. Sometimes this extraneous
information turns out to be true, especially in cases when second or
third wives have been forgotten, or so-called illegitimate children are
discovered. Thus, the LDS records are valuable for researchers, but
should not be taken as true until corroborated by firm evidence. The following web site, I believe has correct information about
Mayflower descendants:
http://www.mayflowerhistory.com/Both John Kerry and George Bush ( and George Bush, Sr.) are descended
from Thomas Richards (c1590-1650) who married Welthian Loring (d. 1679)
and had a daughter, Alice Richards (1627-1721) who married Maj, William
Bradford (1624-1704), the first son of Gov. William Bradford by his
second wife, Alice (Carpenter) Southworth. However, I don't know which
child of Thomas Richards that John Kerry was descended from. See my web
page at:
http://www.concentric.net/~pvb/GEN/arich.html
and scroll down to near the bottom of the page, where the Bush
descendancy is shown as being from daughter, Mary Richards and her
husband, Thomas Hinckley, and certain other notables are also listed. The lines of descent from Gov. William Bradford and other Mayflower
passengers are well documented, and constitute a substantial portion of
the American population. From statistical analysis, I can estimate that
there are about 4 million descendants of Gov. Wiliam Bradford of
Plymouth in the US alive today. And, about 10,000 of us, still bear the
family name. A similar analysis may show that as many as 35 million
people may have a Mayflower passenger among their ancestors. At my last
count, I find that I am a traceable cousin to 12 U.S. Presidents
through what I have collected, and this number may rise as I learn
more. For tracing the ancestry of notables, I recommend the
publications of Gary Boyd Roberts in Baltimore who uses the utmost of
care is ascertaining the validity of data that he receives before
publishing it.Phil
P.S. I also make some mistakes, and have to correct them from time to
time!Phillips V. Bradford, Sc.D.
