Two prostitutes working with the Sonagachi health clinic's anti-AIDS project in Calcutta, Gita Day, left, and Nirmala Ghosh, right, offer their counsel to Minu Das. Researchers who have conducted random sample surveys in Sonagachi have found that H.I.V. infection rates among prostitutes there have been held to 5 percent, a fraction of the more than 50 percent of prostitutes infected in Bombay.
