"I read your story about Khonzagul and you are right. You shouldn't believe everything you read. My name is Fatehulmulk Sangeen Ali Nasir. I am the Mehtar of Chitral's eldest son and I am only 16 years old. So, who was the Playboy Prince in your story? I have a Great Uncle who often goes to the States, but he does not have a Mercedes, but he does fly. I have I huge Family. I don't see the point why everyone in my family claims to be the Prince or the King, right here in Pakistan There is a Mehtar who lives in Peshawar and another in Lahore etc. But the real ex-Mehtar is my father Saifulmulk Nasir. A former Diplomat and ex-council General Pakistan in Hong Kong, and I have traveled quite a bit myself. In your story you mentioned Malik. He is a bit eccentric and he visits us often. My parents don't let me talk to him because they say the only thing he knows how to do is get in trouble. And a bit of info on my family, yes indeed we might be related to Changez Khan, but we are not certain, but we are definitely sure that we are descendants of Tamerlane. The first Katurey Mehtar of Chitral was a nephew of the Mughal Emperor Babur and a grandson of the Taimuri ruler of Herat.

"It has been a pleasure writing to you."

"In the 16th century, the Shah Rais dynasty ruled Chitral. Shah Rais had an adviser by name of Sangin Ali, who apparently came from Khorasan. On the death of Sangin Ali in 1570, his sons ousted Shah Rais and gained control of the country. It is from the second of these sons that the present royal family of Chitral is descended. The highest class, Adamzadas (Katoras), take their names from Sangin Ali's grandsons. The Katoras are believed to have been descended from Moguls. Headed by Baba Ayub in the middle of the 16th century, they have been ruling the country with varying fortunes for the last 350 years, 350 years of war with the nearby states of Gilgit, Chilas and the Pathans."

Baba AYUB [Parents] 1 was born about 1570 in Khorasan.

The Chitralis believe that Baba Ayub was a nephew of Babur, Emperor of India. If this is true, then the ruling family of Chitral is related to both Genghis Khan and Timur Lane, who are therefore included on this family tree.

Tradition has it that the ruling family of Chitral was established by Baba Ayub who was a descendant of both Genghis Khan and Timurlane. Baba Ayub is said to have come from Herat to Chitral. He assisted the ruler of Chitral but was not the ruler himself. Later, his grandsons overthrew the ruler and established the dynasty which has ruled Chitral ever since.

If this is true, then Baba Ayub must have been a relative of Babur. Babur, on his way to conquering India, conquered Chigan Sarai, which is right at the mouth of Chitral. He did not go further north, because he feared the Kafirs.

Since Babur had come from Herat, it seems possible that Baba Ayub came with him. It is unlikely that anybody could have made this journey at a later date. However, the autobiography of Babur does not
mention anybody named Baba Ayub.

Ismail Sloan

Baba Ayub was an adventurer from Khorasan who founded the Royal Family of Chitral. He is believed by the Chitralis to be a descendant of both Genghis Khan (1162-1127) and Timur Lane (1336-1405). It is believed that the Royal Family of Chitral is descended from Chughtay or Chagatai, the Second Son of Genghis Khan, who was the ruler of Kashgar. Chughtay is also claimed as the ancestor of the Moghul Rulers of India.

This Genealogy of the Royal Family of Chitral from Baba Ayub down to Mehtar Aman-ul-Mulk is taken from "Tribes of the Hindoo Koosh" by John Biddulph, published in 1890 in London.

Another source is "The Language and Races of Dardistan" by G. W. Leitner (1840-1899).

The ruling family of Chitral traces its decent from Baba Ayub, a disciple of the saint, Kamal Shah Shams ud-din Tabrizi, who settled in the village of Lon and Gokher. According to family tradition, Ayub was a son of Fareidun Hussein, tenth son of Shah Abu'l Ghazi Sultan Husain Baiqara Bahadur Khan, Padshah of Khorasan. However, Persian, Central Asian or Mughal sources are silent on such a connection.

Baba Ayub, is said to have arrived in Herat from Khorasan, married the daughter of the ruler, a supposed descendant of Alexander the Great. The grandson of this marriage founded the present dynasty. Accordingly, the family actually owes their fortunes to Sangan Ali, sometime Minister to Shah Rais, ruler of Chitral during the sixteenth century. His sons seized power following his death in 1570, establishing a new ruling dynasty over the state. The present ruling dynasty descends from the second of these two sons.
