John Gould was Selectman of Topsfield in 1663, when he was twenty-eightyears old; also in 14 subsequent years, the latest being in 1702 at theage of 67. On October 12, 1660, at the age of 25, he married Sarah,daughter of John and Elizabeth Baker, (born March 9, 1641). John Baker,grocer from Norwich Co., Norfolk, England, came in 1637, in the Rose ofYarmouth, to Boston. John Gould lived with Sarah for nearly 50 years,apparently in the most happy relations, until her death on Jan. 9,1708-9, his own death following a year later. He was a man of prominentimportance in the community thoughout his life; and few names are morefrequently met than his, in the records of his town, county and courts. Avigorous, undismayed maintenance of his opinions, a sturdy independenceand an unselfish public spirit are manifest throughout his career, whichwas characterized by a strong sense of justice, zeal for the welfare ofthe community, and sincere devotion to the spirit of liberty in churchand state.
