Thomas Flegg [Parents] was born in 1615 in Norfolk, England. He died on 6 Feb 1697/1698 in Watertown, Massachusetts. He was buried in 1698 in The Old Graveyard of Watertown situated at the S.E. corner of Mt. Auburn and Grove Sts.. He married ? Mary after 1637 in Watertown, Massachusetts. Thomas immigrated in 1637 to CTAWRC, on the Rose, or the John and Dorothy..

He is said to have settled at Watertown, MA. He is said to have come fromScratby, in the Hundred of East Flegg, Norfolk County. He sailed forAmerica in 1637, when 21 years of age, and settled in New England atWatertown, in the province of Massachusetts Bay. He was the founder ofthe American branch known s the Flagg family.

The Genealogical Dictionary of New England Settlers states that "ThomasFlegg of Watertown, MA came as servant of Richard Carver from Scratby inthe Hundred of East Flegg County Norfolk, a few miles north of Yarmouth, where they emigrated in 1637.

So it was not that this ancestor came over on the Mayflower, nor willthey claim he was driven from England by religious persecution. For, ifthe family tradition is correct, a love affair brought Thomas Flegg toNew England. In the words of Charles A. Flagg, of the Library ofCongress, Washington, "The tradition of Thomas is that he loved a girl ina station below his own; their union was opposed by his family, so theydecided to emigrate, and did so, coming in two vessels which sailed incompany, and marrying soon after arrival. We do not know the maiden nameof the wife, Mary, nor date of marriage."

"The record in Hotten gives Thomas Flegg as servant of Richard Carver. That he was not a servant in the usual meaning of the word issufficiently attested by his appearing in Watertown very soon after as alandowner, and later serving as Selectman. This was a post of real honorin the early days, and the social distinctions were carefully observed.A more careful investigation than I have ever found time to make wouldprobably show that Flegg's relation to Carver was for the voyage only, and was necessitated by some English law requiring that unmarried menbelow a certain age could not leave the country unless in the train ofsome man of family."

"At all events, I am told by those who have examined the Watertownrecords that Thomas was not a very good Puritan, that he fell underchurch discipline more than once, so whatever the cause of hisemigrating, it evidently was not for conscience's sake."

We find further in Dr. Bond's History of Watertown, Mass., p.219, that"Thomas Flegg settled in Watertown as early as 1641, and was probably theancestor of all families bearing that name in this country. He wasSelectman 1671, '74, '75,' 76,'78,'81,' 85 and '87. He lost his left eyeby a gunshot accident, previous to 1659."

Thomas flegg was a son of Bartholomew Flegg, and was baptised in 1615.Leaving Scratby, England he sailed in either the ROSE or the JOHN andDOROTHY - the two ships sailing in company. Listed as servants were IsaacHartt, age 22, and Thomas Flege, age 21 and a mayd servant, one MarableUnderwood age 20. (There is some speculation that the latter might havebeen the Mary who married Thomas).

Dr Bond's history included a map of the original allotments of land andshows that Thomas Flegg's homestall of six acres was in the extremesouthwest part of Watertown, one half mile north of the Charles River andalmost adjoining the town of Waltham, being on the " Sudbury Road", nowMain St. Ernest Flagg's "Genealogical Notes on the Founding of NewEngland" also notes he owned a lot of 20 acres.

? Mary was born in 1619. She died in 1703. She married Thomas Flegg after 1637 in Watertown, Massachusetts.

Whether this Marable Underwood (maid to Richard Carver) on the registeris the Mary who married Thomas Flegg soon after his arrival inMassachusetts is a matter for conjecture for Thomas's sweetheart may havecrossed the ocean in the other ship or may not have been in Carver'sfamily, if on the same vessel.
