He went to Paris, where he resided for many years and that is where he earned the name French John.
Among many papers that were discovered, was a letter written by French John shortly after his succession to the castle. The letter was to a clansman in which he states that it has been more than 40 years since he left France. French John writes: “It is above 40 years since I left France, and for want of converse in the French tongue, I have so forgot it that I dare not venture to write it, therefore your lordship will pardon my making use of the english, which I hope you have not forgot, though you left this country very young.”
