Conn Bacach (the lame) O Neill, the first Earl of Tyrone (c. 1484-1559), was the first of the great warrior O Neills. When his territory was invaded, he went to London to submit to Henry VIII who created him Earl of Tyrone. His family did not approve of an English title and there was much feuding, which led to the murder of one of his sons. Conn took refuge in Dublin, inside the Pale, where he died. Conn was succeeded by his son, Sean an Diomais (Shane the proud). Shane's followers murdered his half-brother, Matthew, and Shane himself was murdered by the MacDonnells of Antrim in revenge for the destruction by Shane of their Scottish settlements in the county.

Shane (or Sean) The Proud O'Neill 1528-1567
Even by the standards of the 16th century, Shane O'Neill, uncle of Hugh O'Neill , was not a nice man. According to O'Faolain, when Shane presented himself at the court of Queen Elizabeth in 1562, his reputation had preceded him. The court "knew that he was enormously rich - he must have owned a hundred thousand cows" (and the land to graze them) "..he had murdered his brother, or caused him to be murdered; killed off his nephew, or caused him to be killed; believed that he kept his mistress, the Countess of Argyle, in chains in a cellar until, of evenings, when the wine was in his brain, he chose to have her up for his pleasure; as they guessed that she had betrayed her husband to become O'Neill's woman; and that while she was in O'Neill's arms, her husband, Calvach O'Donnell was being shown to the people outside in chains like a baboon. They believed he had swarms of children.

Born in 1550, O'Neill was the grandson of Conn O'Neill, first Earl of Tyrone. Conn had a number of sons, and the eldest was for years assumed to be Sean, later to be known as Sean (or Shane) the Proud . However, the widow of a Dundalk blacksmith (Kelly) claimed that Conn O'Neill was the father of her son Matthew, and Conn accepted this. Since Matthew was older than Sean, this would have disinherited Sean, and he vigourously disputed the claim. War broke out between the claimants, and eventually Sean had Matthew, and later Matthew's eldest son Brian, murdered. Hugh O'Neill was Matthew's second son.

He divorced his first wife, his second wife died, and, at 45 he eloped with Mabel Bagenal, the sister of his archenemy, Sir Henry Bagenal. She left him when she discovered he "affected two other gentlewomen". She did not live long and, after her death, he married Catherine Magennis. In 1595 he had a successful encounter with the English at the battle of Clontibret. At the battle of the Yellow Ford, near Armagh in 1598, the Irish had one of their greatest triumphs and Bagenal was killed. Hugh O Neill now began to be regarded as Prince of Ireland.
In 1601 he weas defeated by the English at Kinsale and this marked the end of the Gaelic order and ushered in the exodus to Europe. In 1607, Tyrone and his family and many other chiefs sailed from Lough Swilly, an event to become known as The Flight of the Earls. Tyrone died, homeless and penniless, in Rome.
