Olive Sloan
Olive Scott Sloan, 98, a longtime resident of Johnstown, died Tuesday, Jan. 28, at Life Care Center in Longmont. She was born March 22, 1904, in McVille, Mich., to William James and Agnes Jane (Richmond) Scott. Mrs. Sloan grew up in Rudyard, Mich., and moved to Greeley in 1920. She graduated from Industrial High School, now University High, and then attended Colorado State Teachers College, now the University of Northern Colorado, for two years majoring in fine and applied arts. She taught third and fourth grades at Ashton School and in Bennett. On July 10, 1926, she married John Henry Sloan in Loveland. The couple lived on a dairy farm near Johnstown and later moved into Johnstown, where Mrs. Sloan lived for 34 years. She moved to Hover Manor in Longmont in 1993 and lived in Longmont until her death. Mr. Sloan died in 1973. Mrs. Sloan belonged to a number of clubs and groups in Johnstown including the Friendly Neighbors Extension Club, the Johnstown Home and Garden Club, the Johnstown Woman’s Club, the Senior Citizens and Eastern Star. She was a longtime member of the Johnstown United Methodist Church. She enjoyed many hobbies including sewing, gardening, flower arranging, was an avid reader and did water color and oil paintings. She painted birthday and Christmas cards as well. Some of her paintings are on display at Hover Manor. Mrs. Sloan was very proud of her Scottish ancestry. She was able to visit Scotland and her ancestral home. Survivors are a daughter, Annebelle Cook of Greeley; three sons, Lawrence E. Sloan of Brighton, CO, Donald Scott Sloan of Johnstown and Ronald Scott Sloan of Loveland; 19 grandchildren; and 37 great grandchildren. Her parents; a daughter, Wanda L. Krebill; a daughter-in-law, Caroline Sloan; two grandchildren; a great-grandson; and five sisters, Mabel Tagert, Grace Splan, Ella Brood, Marion McCleary and Gladys Billington, are deceased. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in Johnstown. Interment will be in the Johnstown Cemetery. Friends may visit will be from 2-5 p.m. Sunday at Howe Mortuary, 439 Coffman St., Longmont. Memorial gifts may be made to the Glen A. Jones M.D. Memorial Library, P.O. Box 457, Johnstown, CO 80534, or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
