M i Robert HEMINGS was born in 1762. He died in 1819. M ii James HEMINGS 1, 2 was born in 1765 in Guinea, Cumberland Co., Virginia. He died in 1801 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
A slave of Thomas Jefferson who Jefferson took with him to France for training as a cook. James Hemings witnessed the storming of the Bastille. Later, Thomas Jefferson brought him back to America, where he served as a cook while Thomas Jefferson was Secretary of State in Philadelphia in 1792. Thomas Jefferson gave him his freedom 1796. James Hemings went north but killed himself in Philadelphia in 1801. This incident made Thomas Jefferson reluctant to free other slaves.

This indenture made at Monticello in the county of Albemarle of commonwealth of Virginia on the fifth day of Febraury one thousand seven hundred and ninety six witnesseth that I Thomas Jefferson of Monticello
aforesaid do emancipate manumit and make free James Hemings, son of Betty Hemings, which said James is now of the age of thirty years so that in future he shall be free of free condition, & discharged of all duties & claims of servitude whatsoever, & shall have all the right and privileges of a freedman. In witness whereof I have hereto set my hand & seal on the day & year above written and have made these presents double of the same date, tenor & indenture one whereof is lodged in the court of Albemarle aforesaid to be recorded, & the other is delivered by me to the said James Hemings to be produced when and where it may be necessary.

Said to have been the owner of the slave ship which brought the mother of Betty Hemings to America and to have made her pregnant on the ship. However, no record of a Captain Hemings has ever been found. In the Will of John Wayles, Betty Hemings is mentioned as "Betty Hennings".
