---Also, that vestry book I mention contains a very interesting reference to Richard and his sister Elleanor. When Elleanor became pregnant out of wedlock, she was condemned by the parish vestrymen. Based on what I have read in this volume about similar situations at the parish, this could have had devastating consequences for Elleanor and her child, including banishment or death, if the 12 vestrymen had so ordered. More often than not, the matter seemed to have been resolved if a large fine was paid on the condemned's behalf to the church. The 12 vestrymen, including her own brother, Thomas Jr., ordered that a fine be levied. Elleanor's brother, Richard, then paid the fine in the form of a large quantity of cultivated tobacco to redeem her and her child. They were obviously very close since Richard later left his estate to her son."--

Sam,

The only "gateway" ancestor I could see in your pedigree was Thomas Willis. We have already shown that it is impossible for the Virginia man to be the person you have identified him with in England.

Thomas, son of RIchard Willis, was Sir Thomas Willis (bp. 6 Sep. 1612), who was aged 72 in 1684 when he gave information for the Visitation of Cambridge [when he was living in England]. He died in England 17 Nov. 1701, aged 87. He was not the immigrant to Virginia.

You need to delete this from your pedigree or it will mislead people. If you want to cling to it privately, go ahead. If you are going to make it public, you might at least include the above information so people can take it into account.

Paul Reed

The erroneous ancestry for Thomas Willis of Virginia comes from the following
reference:

"The Virginia Magazine of History and Biography", Vol. V, year ending June 1898, p. 254.

I am not part of what you called the "peanut gallery." I am a descendant of Thomas Willis of Virginia. I have copies or abstracts of every extant document for this man and you don't even have the dates of his life correct. He died sometime between September 1667 and February 1670/1, not in 1660. There is no existing deposition in which this Thomas Willis provided his age, so your date of 1625 for his birth is simple speculation. Thomas Willis and wife Mary were listed on a patent on April 14, 1653, so they were in Virginia by that time. The only "evidence" that can be cited that this Thomas Willis might have been the son of "a" Richard Willis was that Thomas Willis of Virgina named his first son Richard. While naming the eldest son after the paternal grandfather was common at that time, it was not a universal pattern.

(1) Sir Thomas Willis [this is the man who people claim is the Virginia immigrant], bp. 6 Sep. 1612, was aged 72 in 1684, when he gave information for the Visitation of Cambridge, and died 17 Nov. 1701, aged 87. He married Anne Wild, daughter and coheiress of Sir John Wildeby Anne Honeywood. He was created a Baronet 15 Dec. 1641, but his male issue eventually became extinct. His eldest son, Thomas, aged 2 in 1634, died without issue. (Sir Thomas had six sons and seven daughters.)

(2) Sir Richard Willis, second son of Richard Willis and Jane Henmarsh, was bp. 13 Jan. 1613/14, and buried 9 Dec. 1690. He married Alice Fox, daughter and heir of Thomas Fox, MD, by Anne Honeywood. He was also created a Baronet, on 11 June 1646. He had one son and two daughters. His only son, Sir Thomas Fox Willis, died without issue unmarried in 1701, aged 59.

(3) William Willis, bp. 16 Apr. 1615, was a colonel of the horse. He married Katharine Offley, daughter of Sir John Offley, and widow of Thomas, son of Thomas Willis of the Inner Temple, London and Ahs, Hampshire.

(4) Elizabeth Willis, bp. 29 Sep. 1616, married Sir William Man of Canterbury.

If you examine the above, you will see that Thomas Willis, the Virginia immigrant, was not the man in England so
frequently stated on the Internet.

There was a marriage contract dated 2nd October 1670, between Mary, widow of Thomas Willis and Matthew Bentley. Their issue were Richard, John and Eleanor. Thomas had land in York Ridge in 1653, and Thomas, with William Willis, in 1665 had 250 acres of land in Gloucester Co on Grave Neck Creek. He was in Lancaster Co in 1657, and on 1 Oct 1667 Thomas had wife, Mary. Someone sent me this information nearly 20 years ago.
