Count Pierre Marie Xavier Raphael Antoine Melchior de Polignac, duc de Valentinois (24 October 1895 - 10 November 1964), was son of Maxence de Polignac (1857-1936) and his wife Suzanne de la Torre y Mier (1858-1913), and married the hereditary Princess of Monaco.Because a female Grimaldi could inherit only if her husband was also a Grimaldi, Pierre de Polignac became Prince Pierre Grimaldi, Comte de Polignac on 18 March, 1920, the day before his religious marriage.
He married civilly 18 March 1920 in Monaco Princess Charlotte of Monaco, née Charlotte Louise Juilette Louvet, daughter of Louis II of Monaco and Marie Juliette Louvet. They were judicially separated on 20 March, 1930 at Paris, and divorced by ordinance of Prince Louis II on 18 February, 1933. Following the divorce, Charlotte took up residence at the Château de Marchais with René Gigier, one of France’s most infamous jewel thieves.

Charlotte Grimaldi (September 30, 1898 - November 15, 1977) was a Princess of Monaco.
Born Charlotte Louise Juliette Louvet in Constantine, Algeria, she was the illegitimate daughter of Marie Juliette Louvet (1867 - 1930), and Prince Louis II of Monaco (1870 - 1949).
Charlotte's mother was married to, in 1885, Achille Delmaet, 1860-1914, a photographer. Later divorced, they had two children: Georges, 1884-1955, and Marguerite, 1886-1894. At some point, Louvet moved to Algeria, where she worked as a cabaret singer or a laundress (sources differ) and met the heir to the Monegasque throne. Though it is sometimes alleged that a marriage between the two occurred, Charlotte, born in 1898, was declared an illegitimate child. Though he took full responsibility for his daughter's upbringing, eventually Prince Louis left Juliette to return to his duties in Monaco.
A political crisis loomed for the Prince because, without any other heir, the throne of Monaco would pass to the duke of Urach, a German prince, related through Prince Albert's aunt, Florestine.
To ensure this did not happen, on November 15, 1911 a law was passed recognizing Charlotte as Louis's daughter, and making her part of the sovereign family. This law was later held to be invalid under the 1882 statutes. Thus another law was passed in 1918 modifying the statutes to allow the adoption of an heir, with succession rights. Charlotte was adopted by Louis in 1919, and became Charlotte Louise Juliette Grimaldi, Hereditary Princess of Monaco, and Duchess of Valentinois.

Sun Sep 1, 3:08 PM ETLONDON (Reuters) - A book to be published this week says that Queen Victoria may have been illegitimate, possibly undermining the whole Royal Family's legitimacy, the Sunday Times has reported.
In his book "The Victorians", acclaimed biographer A.N. Wilson alleges that Victoria's mother, Princess Victoire of Leiningen, had a lengthy affair with her Irish-born secretary Sir John Conroy and that he, rather than Prince Edward, the Duke of Kent, was Victoria's real father. Buckingham Palace said on Sunday it would not comment on the allegation. Wilson based his argument partly on medical data, the newspaper said.
Records show that the illness porphyria -- a hereditary disorder of body metabolism -- once ran in the Royal Family, but there is no evidence that Victoria carried it or passed it to her descendants.
Wilson also writes that Victoria was a carrier for the disease haemophilia, although medical records tracing her mother's ancestors for 17 generations show no evidence of the disease, suggesting Victoria inherited it from Conroy.
But American researchers on Victoria's medical background said it was "extremely unlikely" that Conroy had been a haemophiliac, and that the disease was more likely to have resulted from a genetic mutation, the newspaper reported.
Queen Victoria's claim to the crown was through her father, the brother of William IV, who died without children. If Wilson's suggestion is true, it would challenge the right of Victoria's descendants to the
throne, including the current queen, Elizabeth, her great-great-granddaughter.If Victoria was illegitimate, Prince Ernst of Hanover -- the husband of Princess Caroline of Monaco -- would be the rightful claimant to the throne, according to Burke's Peerage.
"His ancestor was the Duke of Cumberland, who was Victoria's uncle (and brother of William IV)," Harold Brooks-Baker, publishing director of Burke's Peerage, told Reuters. Brooks-Baker said he did not believe the claims of illegitimacy in the book and said it was doubtful Queen Victoria's remains would ever be made available for DNA testing.
