Benjamin, the eldest son, of Amherst County, Virginia, born in 1750, and died in 1821, married Martha Merriweather. He served under General Washington in 1777-78; also under General Lee; was made a prisoner at the capture of Charleston, S. C.; was promoted to Captain. He was one of the original members of the Order of the Cincinnati. He and his brother, Zachariah, were in love with Martha Merriweather, of Amherst County, Virginia; Benjamin won andmarried her. This caused a lifetime estrangement between the brothers. Benjamin moved to Georgia in 1784, at the close of the Revolution. He was a member of the convention that formed the State Constitution, before its admission into the Federal Union; was President of the State Senate, member of the United States Congress, and afterwards Judge of the Superior Court of the State. He lived and died a respected citizen of Georgia, and amassed a large fortune. The present Taliaferro County was so called in his honor. He had eleven children, as follows: 7Louis B., married BetsyJohnson, and lived many years in Madison County, Alabama, but died in Nach??doches, Texas. BIOGRAPHY: George Jefferson received as a gift about 580 acres in Lunenbu rg County 13 May 1761. He married Elizabeth Garland, daughter of David G arland, 2 July (consent) 1764. He was among the first justices of Pittsy lvania County, where he owned 8,000 acres, and was a militia captain. J ohn Davis was overseeing the Pittsylvania County plantation for George Je fferson of Mecklenburg County in 1767 .
George was in Anson County, North Carolina, by 8 November 1777 when he s old about 1,020 acres on Turkey Cock Creek in Pittsylvania County to Will iam Hoy. Elizabeth relinquished her dower right. He was still in Anson 1 0 June 1779 when he deeded one bay mare to David Garland .
George died in Richmond County, North Carolina, naming the following fou r sons in his will (will dated 26 Jan. 1780, recorded Mar. 1780). Georg e owned 1,561 acres in Pittsylvania County that was reported on the delin quent tax roll for 1783.
