Sex in the 90s: The Safest Sex of All

MILES McPHERSON, Associate Pastor, Horizons Christian Felloship: "God created sex as a present for man and woman." My name is Miles McPherson. I am an associate pastor at Horizon Christian Fellowship, former San Diego Chargers defensive back, played in 1982 to 1985. And I spend my life ministering God's word to young people around the country, teaching them about sexual abstinence and sexual Miles McPherson purity. When someone comes to me and tells me that they're frustrated with masturbation or they feel bad because they're doing it, the fact that they feel bad because they're doing it is proof that there's something wrong. "And when God says that he wants you to wait, God is saying that he wants you to enjoy this to the max, I don't want you to get that substitute. I don't want you to get second best. I don't want you to get the perverted version of what I created. I don't want you to get Madonna's version or Bobby Brown's version, I want you to get my version."

LEILA LANCE, Health Educator and Sexuality Counselor: "We are really programmed from all kinds of things out there that this part (gesures below her waist) of our body is nasty and smelly." My name is Leila Lence. I am a health educator and a speaker about such topics as sexuality and masturbation. I think there is a lot of positive benefits to masturbating. It's a good way to find out about what makes you have an orgasm, what doesn't make you have an orgasm. "If you do masturbate, there's a lot of other places on your body that feels good, too." If you want to learn how to be a better partner, I think it's a good thing. "It's a wonderful option if you wanna have a safer sex life." Once you do become more comfortable with your body, yes, you are gonna be more comfortable putting on a condom. Yes, you are going to feel more comfortable touching your own breasts and giving yourself an exam. "When people are denying S.A.L.T. Members you an education, they are denying you part of your own choice." We should be teaching people to critically think about the information that they have at hand so they can decide what choices they want to make for themselves.

O'DONNELL: We're on opposite ends of the spectrum in this country. On one end, they're afraid to discuss sexuality.

JAMES SEDLACK, President, Stop Planned Parenthood International: We have to, number one, do not inundate our children with sex education programs. We have to get rid of all the sex education programs.

O'DONNELL: On the other end, they're too afraid to discuss sexuality.

WOMAN AT MASTURBATION PROGRAM: These are anal beads. There are many sizes of anal beads, this is what we call medium.

EARL SMITH, Pastor, Physical Education Teacher and Health Teacher: My name is Earl Smith. I am a physical education teacher at the Thurgood Marshall Academy Of Learning and Social Change. As a pastor, I do understand the moral issue of why one does not want masturbation taught to students but as a health teacher, I do understand that we do have a responsibility to teach our students Earl Smith survivor skills. The taboos on masturbation within the African-American community and Latino community are is that it's an attack on machoism. You mean to tell me you can't get a girl? Then to the point that you got to play with yourself? Even though many men of the African-American and Latino community do masturbate, they won't admit it publicly.

KID: Just like he said, too many ladies need too many boyfriends out here to be masturbating.

SMITH: If you gotta get busy then you gotta discuss it. A lot of the diseases that our kids are experiencing could be prevented but all because we have these myths and these taboos, we're killing our kids and destroying our society.

O'DONNELL: The reason that you don't tell them that masturbation is the answer to AIDS and all these other problems that come with sex outside of marriage is because again it is not addressing the issue. You're just gonna create somebody who is, I was gonna say, toying with his sexuality. Pardon the pun but-
