Dake's Complete Chess Career

By Sam Sloan

Arthur W. Dake was born on April 8, 1910. He learned chess at the age of 16 after leaving high school and while working as a seaman. Dake's career is unusual in that he did not enter a tournament until he was already a strong player and, as a result, virtually all of his tournament results, even from his very first tournament, were reported in publications such as the American Chess Bulletin. Dake's first tournament was the 1930 New York State Championship, in which he finished third. In addition, Dake's career as a tournament player was exceptionally short. Virtually all of his chess was played during the period 1930 to 1938. Dake then stayed virtually out of chess for 37 years until he made his come back in Lone Pine 1975.

As a result, unlike almost any other strong player, it is possible to trace almost every tournament game Dake played. Here are the complete tournament results of Dake, including all of the results which formed the basis for the grandmaster title application which was submitted on his behalf during the FIDE Congress in Dubai, 1986.

In considering these results, it is important to remember that Dake was slightly older than his contemporary rivals. The official birthdate of Samuel Reshevsky is November 26, 1911 (although there is some skepticism as to that). Arnold Denker was born on February 21, 1914 and Reuben Fine was born on October 11, 1914. Thus, Dake was four and a half years older than Fine.

New York International Tournament, Almanac Hotel, April 18 - May 3, 1931. Dake lost his chance for eternal fame and glory when he achieved an easily winning endgame position against Capablanca, but lost.

Dake's result in New York 1931 was marred by a disputed forfeit loss to Turover. According to American Chess Bulletin, when Turover was short of time with only 15 minutes left on his clock, Dake came to the umpire, Dr. Lederer, and asked him to watch Turover's clock. The umpire told Dake that this was none of his (Mr. Dake's) business. In this tournament, as the clocks had no flag, there was a rule that a white space had to show between the black dot and the minute hand. When Turover had no time left, Dake waved his hands several times pointing to the clock. Dake won the game on the board, but the umpire ruled that Dake had disturbed Turover's concentration and therefore awarded the game by forfeit to Turover. On appeal, the referee, Alvin C. Cass, ruled that, while he found the penalty to be harsh since Turover apparently had a lost position in any event, nevertheless "Discipline must be maintained and this means that [the penalty] must remain as he decided them except in case of clear abuse."

Antwerp team matches (which followed the International Team Tournament in Prague), 1931, Dake "equaled the scores of Rubinstein and Yates". This was a Schevenigen team match in which a team of six Belgians played a team of five foreigners. The foreigners were Dake, Rubinstein, F. D. Yates, Winter and Miss Menchik. The Belgians included George Koltanowski and Sapira. Dake scored 4 wins and 2 draws. Rubinstein won 5 and lost to Koltanowski. Yates won five and lost to Sapira. Winter scored 3 1/2 - 2 1/2. Naturally, Dake did not play either Rubinstein or Yates. Yates died of a likely suicide on November 11, 1932

American Chess Bulletin, September - October, 1931 states: "Before going abroad, Dake contested a match of two games with Reuben Fine at the Marshall Chess Club. Conceding the odds of a draw, Dake won two games in succession. Fine, however, drew on even terms with him when they met again in the state tournament in Rome.

"Dake applied for admission to the annual tournament of the Western Chess Association, to be held this year in Tulsa, Oklahoma, but, before leaving New York, was informed that the list of entries had been closed. En route to his home in Portland, Oregon, he stopped off at St. Louis and made further inquiry at the headquarters of the Western Association, which admits Eastern, as well as Western players. According to Dake, he was told that the reasons for his exclusion were not personal, but political; that is, political in the chess sense."

Tulsa, 1931 later became the first tournament victory for Samuel Reshevsky.

GAMES OF ARTHUR W. DAKE

Here is a representative sample of 14 games played by Arthur W. Dake. The criteria for the selection of these particular games was that none of them are now available in any commercial database. These games were taken from American Chess Bulletin and Chess Review for the years in which they were played and have not been republished since.

By far the most complete collection of games from the 1930s can be found in the just released DEJAVU2, which has more than 500,000 games on CD-ROM. However, none of the 14 games presented here are to be found there. These 14 games can also not be found on the CD-ROM put out by Chess Assistant, which has more than 400,000 games.

It is becoming harder and harder to find master games which have not been published in a database somewhere. However, there are more than a dozen additional games which Dake played against Fine and Horowitz during the period 1933-1936 which have not yet found their way into any electronic database. I became tired of entering games so I did not get around to doing those.

The following game against Santasiere is the first published game ever played by Dake. It appeared in American Chess Bulletin, February, 1931, page 39.
