Fortunato D. Oblena stands with International Chess Master Rogelio Barcenilla and World Chess Federation ( FIDE ) President Florencio Campomanes
This photo was taken from the Gulf News, Dubai, for 30 September 1989. On or about December 12, 1989, less than three months later, Oblena had my wife, Linda M. Duavis, detained inside the Philippine Embassy in Abu Dhabi. I do not know the exact date, because I had gone to Pakistan for three weeks. Linda was three months pregnant with our child at the time.

Linda remained in what Oblena called his personal "consular custody" for at least the next one and a half years. Meanwhile, our baby, a little boy, died. Linda is possibly even still there, as she has not been seen or heard from since.
