Alden Jacobson flew on the bombing mission which dropped the A-Bomb on Nagasaki. Alden was an Air Force pilot who flew many B-29 "SUPERFORTRESS" bombing missions over Japan, but he was not piloting the aircraft which dropped THE BOMB. Alden was in a support aircraft, flying Super Dumbo. He saw the bomb drop and the mushroom cloud go up.

His purpose for being on the mission was that, in case a plane had to ditch in the ocean, he would direct that plane to a secret location where a submarine would be waiting to pick up the crew and tell the submarine where the crew was.

Alden was flying on this mission essentially as a passenger. Alden had signed up for this mission as a backup pilot to increase his number of missions so that he could get to go home early. Other members of his regular crew objected. They felt that it was bad luck if they did not always fly together.

Alden's plan did not work, because this mission ended the War with Japan. Alden was stationed for the next five years as part of the American Occupation Forces in Japan. One of his sons, William, was born in Japan in 1948.

The B-29 airplane which Alden regularly flew was number 53 with a Circle X on the tail. This is not the airplane that he was on for the Nagasaki mission. On that mission, he was flying essentially as a passenger. The B-29 which he regularly flew, number Circle X 53, is in the video "From Pearl Harbor to Tokyo Bay". It is in the section called "Mining the Inland Sea". Alden Jacobson was involved in dropping mines into harbors.

Alden retired as a Lieutenant Colonel after 20 years in the Air Force. He then bought out the Family Farm ten miles north of Creston Iowa from his brothers and sisters, but then farmed the farm only a few years before he sold the farm at a huge profit. The farm had stayed in the family for just 100 years.

Alden was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and other medals by the US Air Force.

He lived near Key Largo, Florida. He never doubted that dropping the A-bomb was the right thing to do.

There were five B-29s on Nagasaki mission.
1. BocksCar - Pilot - Sweeney
2. Aircraft #95 - Pilot - McNight - Weather aircraft to Nagasaki
3. Aircraft #88 - Pilot - Marquart - Weather aircraft to Kokura
4. Great Artiste - Pilot - Bock - Instrument aircraft
5 Big Stink - Pilot - Hopkins - Photo aircraft

Alden Jacobson regularly flew B-29 Circle X 53 . The plane was named JAKE'S JALOPY. The serial number was 44-69985. Bob Mann has supplied the actual dates from the 9BG Mission Log. It shows a total of 17 missions flown over Japan in this aircraft with Alden Jacobson as aircraft commander.

The source of the data is a paper document entitled:
MISSION RECORD (LOG)
Ninth Bomb Group
313th WING

(Copied from the 9th Bombardment Group Commanding Officer's Notebook contributed to the 9th Bomb Group Archives by Henry Huglin, Brigadier General, U.S. Air Force, Retired)

Alden attended four years of college and then became an air force cadet and obtained a pilot's rating. He was a basic instructor and flew 31 bombing missions in combat during World War II. He was in the US Army Air Corps for 24 years and retured as a Lt. Col.

My uncle, Alden Jacobson, went by the nickname of "Jake".

The fact that this airplane was named "JAKE'S JALOPY" is certainly very strong evidence if not proof that this was known as my uncle's aircraft.

The format is date - target - aircraft commander. The missions were as follows:

5/20-21 Mining Jacobson
5/24-25 Mining Jacobson
5/26-27 Mining, Jacobson

Newell Edward JACOBSON [Parents] 1 was born on 17 Jun 1918 in Grafton, Union County, Iowa. He died on 25 Apr 1989 in Homestead, Florida. He was buried in Trinity, North Carolina. He married Dorothy May MEYERS on 22 Jun 1946.

My uncle Newell Jacobson served as an officer in the Tank Corps under Patton in World War II and Fought in the Battle of the Bulge. At the Battle of the Bulge, between 16 December 1944 and 28 January 1945, there were 81,000 American casualties, including 23,554 captured and 19,000 killed. My uncle got a very minor wound, although not in the battle itself but before the battle in the campaign across France. He got a purple heart for that. However, he did not run for president after he got home. He did not even run for Congress. Instead he served 20 years in the military, serving in the Korean War too but in an office job, rising to Lt. Colonel until retirement and when he came home worked in the post office in Council Bluffs Iowa until age 65.

Newell Jacobson fought in World War II as a member of the Allied Forces which crossed France and entered Germany. Newell was not in the Normandy Invasion but joined with the Allied Forces about one-third way across France. He was a member of the Army Tank Corps under General Patton.

Newell Jacobson fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He was a Liaison Officer who carried messages between command posts. Almost all of the other Liaison Officers in his group were killed in the battle.

Newell Jacobson was later credited with capturing 27 German Soldiers. He and his partner took a stroll outside their camp when, to their surprise, a German soldier jumped out behind a rock with his hands up. When Newell, who had studied some German, accepted his offer of surrender, the soldier said that there were other soldiers who wanted to surrender too. When Newell agreed, the German soldier called out and 26 other soldiers jumped out behind rocks and trees with their hands up. Newell and his partner then marched them all back to camp, with his partner leading the way to may sure that their own soldiers did not shoot, and Newell following up the rear.

Thus, Newell and his partner alone were credited with capturing 27 German soldiers. Newell's partner was later killed in the war.

Newell Jacobson received the Purple Heart for what he said was a very minor injury.

Newell Jacobson was later stationed in Germany and also served in the Korean War, where he learned to speak Korean. He retired as a major after 20 years in the Army. He later worked for the post office in Council Bluffs, Iowa and then retired to Homestead, Florida, where he died in 1989.

Has a memorial marker but is not buried at Prarie Lawn Cemetery, Spaulding, Iowa.

Although women are exempt from combat duty, my daughter, Lance Corporal Shamema Honzagool Sloan, does the most dangerous job imaginable. Her job in the Iraq War is to arm the bombs on the airplanes before they fly out to combat missions. Then, when the planes come back, if there are some bombs remaining undropped and still in the airplanes, her job is to disarm them. She arms and disarms bombs on F-16s, F-18s and A-10s.

She stands in the flight lines when the planes come in and after they land is the first person to get in the airplanes to see if there are any undetonated bombs inside.

I assume that the US Marines discovered her high intelligence and extreme steadiness and gave her this job for that reason.

The Creepy Crawley Guy is a Hillbilly from the Appalachian Mountain of Pennsylvania. He and his brother, James, who is also a Hillbilly, are living with my ex-wife in the Queensbridge North housing project, in Queens, New York. Dayawathie has never seen a hillbilly before and probably does not know what they are. I grew up in the Appalachian Mountains of Virginia and therefore I have seen lots of hillbillies. The baby sitter my mother hired, coincidentally named Roxie Sloane (no relation), was a hillbilly.

Dorscher Leidholdt and Theresa Coutney please take note: The result of your evil deeds in making Dayawathie afraid of what you will do if she resumes living with me is to cause her to become pregnant and to give birth to a child by a real hillbilly.

Hillbillies are white people who have lived in the Appalachian Mountains for hundreds of years. They are descendants of some of the early immigrants to America.

If you have seen the movie "Deliverance", one of the all time great movies, you will know what a hillbilly looks like. The two hillbillies living with Dayawathie bear a strong resemblance to the two hillbillies in the movie, except that they are shorter, only about 5 feet 6 inches. The neighbors in the QueensBridge North project do not like them and call them "white trash”.

According to the report of Forensic Psychologist of Dr. Mark Rand, he states that he graduated from 11th grade and smokes 10 cigarettes a day. He recently moved to Elmira, New York.
