Sam Sloan's Big Combined Family Trees

Howard Creighton SLOAN [Parents] [scrapbook] 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 was born 7, 8, 9 on 18 Mar 1873 in Pennsylvania. He died on 9 Mar 1940 in Mattoon, Coles, Illinois. He was buried in Rosehill Cemetery, Chicago, Section R, Lot 258. He married Emily BAYFIELD in Mar 1902. The marriage ended in divorce. Howard was counted in a census 10, 11, 12 in 1880 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Obituary: Mattoon Journal Gazette--March 29, 1940--Saturday.

H. T. Sloan, a member of the Odd Fellow Old Folks Home colony since August 1939, died at 2:25 this morning in the Home Hospital, where he had been a patient since a short time after entering the institution. Death was due to a paralytic stroke. Mr Sloan was 66 years old.

The body will be taken to Chicago later today where funeral arrangements will be made. Burial will be in Rose Hill cemetery in that city. Mr. Sloan came to the home from Chicago, where two of three sons reside.
The other son lives in Iowa.

The 1910 census, reel 273, T624, Vol. 090, E.D. 1236, Visit # 0196. It shows three additional members of the household. These are William, age 20, born Illinois, Gerdrud, age 17, born Illinois and Albert, age 14, born Illinois.

According to "Frank Mitchell's Sloan Connection" website, Howard Creighton Sloan may have had an earlier wife named Krogh and three children named William, Gertrude and Albert from that marriage: However, I believe that this is a mistake. Bernard Krough was married to Christine Jacobsen. They were no relation to the Sloans. They were probably roomers or boarders in my grandmother's house. The house is big enough to have apartments upstairs or downstairs. I was in it many times when I was a child. It would be surprising if they did not rent out space.

The idea that Krough was the first wife of Howard Creighton Sloan came from Cheryl Brackney, who is my second cousin. I have not heard from Cheryl in about four years.

Other information is from Lee Family History and Pedigree Resource File and US 1880 Census. Howard was divorced from Emily Bayfield. She later married Art Lemieux.

Dear Cheryl J. Brackney,

I am very interested to see your discovery that my great-grandmother was named Emily Peterson. I would be interested in knowing your source. (I suspect that your source may be your own mother, as she might have known this.)

I cannot find anybody named Thomas Bayfield or Emily Peterson on the 1880 Census. They must have been living in Chicago at the time. Can you think of a reason?

The 1880 Census shows that Howard Creighton Sloan had five brothers and sisters in Buck Valley, Pennsylvania. I have not been able to find out any trace of any of them. Do you know what happened to them?

There were several persons named Thomas Bayfield born in Norfolk England or in London England in the early 1800s. Do you know which one may be my great-grandfather?

Sam Sloan

Actually I have a giant-sized family bible from the early 1800's and it was a family bible of Tho. and Emily and her maiden name is listed there as well as Tho. actual obituary from the local paper - I did find them on one census
and have a copy of the doc but we are in the process of moving and it is packed and in storage at this point - I won't get to the boxes until our home is finished building sometime in mid-February but I will make note to
copy the docs for you at that time. You're right though, I couldn't find them on the 1880 either.

I can't seem to get further back then these two either - so, that is where I will pick up my research after we settle into our home. I'm in school full-time and running a full-time business right now so time is short.

On May 7, 1899, Creighton Sloan, father of Howard Creighton Sloan, bought a 20x20 cemetery plot in the Rosehill Cemetery in Chicago, Illinois. The plot is 414 square feet. He paid $525 for the plot which was a lot of money at that time. So far, eight people are buried in that cemetery plot and two more have been cremated. There is still space for at least two more prople in that plot.

Emily BAYFIELD [Parents] [scrapbook] 1 was born 2, 3 on 26 Apr 1879 in Chicago, Illinois. She died on 15 Jun 1966 in Illinois. She was buried in Mt. Olive Cemetery, Section K, Lot 73, 3800 N. Narragansett Ave., Chicago, Illinois. She married Howard Creighton SLOAN in Mar 1902. The marriage ended in divorce. Emily was counted in a census 4, 5 in 1880 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois.

Other marriages:
LEMIEUX, Arthur E.

Emily Bayfield divorced Howard Creighton Sloan on 28 Sep 1928 and married his best friend Art Lemieux on 11 Oct 1928, two weeks later.

Dear Sam,
Got your email address from the Swedish Institite of Emigration and also happened to walk into your web site which I thought was impressive! I am just now working on a book based on a manuscript I found in Kalmar läns museum. This was written around 1910 by a lady who was brought up in a place called Viggesbo (which we now own) in the 1850s and 1860s and she gives a picture of how life was in the area at that time . She also mentions Jacob Axel Johansson and his wife (both born in 1810) who lived in the neighbouring farm Häggarp as follows (roughly translated):

" Among those of the farmers that were the most regular visitors to our home was Father Jacob in Häggarp and his wife. My mother really liked her; she was such a fine, sensible and clearheaded woman - her looks were simple, ingenuous and dignified. Many a countess would envy her manners and appearance although not not her strong local (Ydre) dialect."
Unfortunately she did not make the trip to New York but died on the ship whereas Jacob lived on until 1886 following a press cutting from that year.
I thought it would be nice for you to read the lines above and also I have two questions:

1. In the scrapbook for Jacob Axel Johansson/Johnson there was a photo of
him. Do you know from which year that is and do you mind me publishng that
in the book? If OK would it be possible to email me a detailed photo that
could be printed?

2. They also had a daughter who emigrated to the US , Anna Lovisa Jacobsdotter born 24 Sept 1838 and married to Johan Erik Larsson born 11 Nov 1835. Have you got any information on them?
Best regards
Claes Henckel

As a matter of fact the only base I have for my assumption that she
emigrated to the US is a press cutting from "Sändebudet" dated Oct 4th 1886
where the death of Axel Jacob Johnson is announced stating that he is
mourned by one son and one daughter in America and one son in Sweden( =
Johan August Jacobsson born in Kisa Jan 4th 1835) . The paper states that
Jacob Axel died Sept 19th 1886 by a heartattack having been completely fit
two hours earlier. If you have a fax no I could fax this page to you or put
it in the mail (can not scan it where I am now)
Best reg

Sam,

I assumed it was his wife since it said 'son and daughter of"

Here is the exact quote from the book. It was under the heading
Johnson. "Inf. son & dau of J. W. & J. Jacob Azel 1 Aug. 1810-10
Sep. 87." Could Jacob have remarried?

The death date of the son and daughter are the same, and also the
same as the death date for Jacob as listed in the WPA records.
Perhaps some one made an error in transcribing the records. If the
children were twins they would have been born on the same date but
to die on the same date as their father....hmmm Perhaps a fire or
accident or an error in transcribing.

Maybe your second cousins can go out to the cemetery and check it
out. I will be going in May and can see what I can find for you. I
live in California and make a trip back once a year. Let me know if
you would like me to go out there and check it out.

Jacob Johnson appears on the 1870 Census in Jefferson County, Iowa, looks like Penn Township, page 40, line 40, age 60 as a R.R. Laborer. The railroad was being constructed through there at this time. There are 12 Swedes on this page. The top name is R.R. Contractor and members of his family. What is surprising is that his son, Axel Jacobson is not in this group or anywhere to be found. Perhaps Axel was a in Chicago at this time and Jabob had gone to Jefferson County to join the other Swedes there and later Axel came to join him, rather than the other way around.

This began a large Swedish immigration to the American Midwest. "Peter Cassel Day" is still celebrated in parts of Sweden. http://www.samsloan.com/swedish.htm

The members of the group of 25 consisted of Peter Cassel and his wife and five children, John Danielson and his wife and five children, Eric Peter Anderson who later married in America, Sarah Anderson who later married in America, John Munson his wife and two children, and Peter Anderson and his wife and three children.

Although 1996 will serve as the 150th anniversary of the start of the mass emigration of Swedes to America, 1995 could have served just as easily as the jubilee year. In 1845, a Swedish farmer named Peter Cassel led a group of over twenty friends and family members from the Kisa area in Ostergotlands lan across the Atlantic to settle in southeastern Iowa. Here they founded the New Sweden settlement in Jefferson County, the first lasting Swedish settlement in the United Stales in the nineteenth century.

Cassel's departure from Sweden, and his letters hack home, started a major debate in the country over the merits (or lack thereof) of emigration. Particularly because Cassel was the first landowning farmer to emigrate to America, newspapers such as Ostgota Correspondenten from Linkoping often printed his "America letters" and sparked a lively debate, leading to the immigration of millions of Swedes to the Midwestern United States.

F iii Catherina CASSEL 1, 2 was born on 4 Feb 1836 in Follingso, Kisa, Ostergotland, Sweden. She died in 1846 in Iowa.
