Obituary of Stan Haw

Stan Haw, 74, passed away Monday, Feb. 24, 2003, at St. Vincent Healthcare, after a brief battle with cancer.

Stan was born Oct. 21, 1928, to Stanley A. Haw and Matilda Houston Haw in Ottumwa, Iowa. He grew up in Ottumwa and graduated from Westminster College in Fulton, Mo. After graduation, he entered the Army and was stationed in Germany during the Korean War.

Stan married his high school sweetheart, Barbara Goiens on June 17, 1951, in Ottumwa. Stan worked for the family wholesale hardware business and later operated Stanley Hardware retail store in Oskaloosa, Iowa. In 1963, he and his family moved to a ranch at St. Xavier, where he raised registered and commercial Black Angus. During the early 1980s, Stan and Barbara moved to El Paso, Texas, where he was a salesman. After retirement, they returned to Billings in 1996.

Stan is preceded in death by his father and grandson Houston James Haw. Stan is survived by his wife, Barbara; his mother, Matilda Sloan; and four sons, Chris of Denver, Craig (Holly) of Eagan, Minn., Jim (Kathy) of Billings and Brian (Karri) of Helena. He has nine grandchildren, Jennifer (Dustin) Mobley, Travis, Ashley, Alexandra, Heather, Heidi, Holly, Hayley, Herman; and great-grandson, Hudson Mobley.

Also surviving Stan is his brother, Edwin Haw of Rochester, Minn.; sister, Joanna Rogers of Rochester; and brother, Dixon Sloan of Tucson, Ariz.

Stan had a great love for the outdoors and was happiest working his cows on the ranch and most recently hiking the Appalachian Trail.

Memorial services will be held Friday, Feb. 28, at 2 p.m., at the First Presbyterian Church.

Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, corner of 13th and Poly Drive; Northern Rockies Cancer Center, PO Box 369, Billings, MT; or to a charity of one's choice.

ROCHESTER -- A memorial service for Matilda Haw Sloan will be in Ottumwa, Iowa, at a later date.

Mrs. Sloan, 99, of Rochester, formerly of Ottumwa, died Dec. 27, 2003.

Anna Matilda Houston was born March 16, 1904, in Latrobe, Pa. She attended Hood College in Frederick, Md., and after graduating from Boston School of Physical Education, worked at the YWCA in Buffalo, N.Y. In 1926, she married Stanley A. Haw of Ottumwa in Latrobe. He died in 1955. She married Edward Sloan in 1958, and he preceded her in death in 1978. She lived in Ottumwa from 1926 until moving to Rochester in 1994. During World War II, she volunteered for the USO at the YWCA. Mrs. Sloan was active in PEO, Wahanka, DAR, YWCA, the Ottumwa Hospital Auxiliary and First Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Jody H. Rogers of Rochester; a son, Dixon H. (Caroline) Sloan of Tucson, Ariz.; 14 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Two sons preceded her in death.

Edwin H. 'Ed' Haw -- Rochester

ROCHESTER -- A memorial service for Edwin H. "Ed" Haw will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at Mahn Family Funeral Home-Rochester Chapel, with the Rev. Nicklas Mezacapa of Calvary Episcopal Church officiating. Private interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery.

Mr. Haw, 72, of Rochester, a retired women's apparel store owner, died of cancer Monday (Dec. 1, 2003) at Seasons Hospice.

Born May 1, 1931, in Ottumwa, Iowa, he grew up there, worked at the family business, Haw Hardware, and then attended Kemper Military School in Booneville, Mo., and Westminster College in Fulton, Mo. From 1951 to 1953 he served with the Army Military Police in Germany, and after his discharge attended the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, where he received a bachelor of arts degree in business. On Dec. 20, 1958, he married Joan Reese in Des Moines, Iowa. She died Nov. 7, 1999. Before moving to Rochester he worked for AB Dick Co. in Des Moines. In 1965 he purchased Ina May's Women's Apparel in Rochester and operated it until 1981 and then worked in insurance and real estate sales in the Rochester area.

Survivors include two daughters, Leslie (Kevin) Cunningham of Golden Valley, Minn., and Karen Haw of Rochester; a son, Ed Jr. of Rochester; eight grandchildren; his mother, Matilda Haw of Rochester; a sister, Jody Rogers of Rochester; and a brother, Dixon Sloan of Tucson, Ariz. He was preceded in death by his father and a brother.

Friends may call an hour before the service Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to Seasons Hospice or to arthritis research.

Joan REESE died on 7 Nov 1999. She married Edwin H. HAW on 20 Dec 1958 in Des Moines, Iowa.
