Captain Edward Howard SLOAN [Parents] [scrapbook] 1 was born on 20 Jun 1904 in Chicago, Illinois. He died on 7 Jun 1978 in Bladensburg, Wapello, Iowa. He was buried in Ottumwa Cemetery, Iowa. He married Anna Matilda HOUSTON in 1958 in Ottumwa, Iowa.
Other marriages:WHITEHILL, Mariam "Midge"
Edward H. Sloan was a US Marine who fought in the Invasion of Iwo Jima. He was a Captain in the Fifth Service Battalion. His name is listed on page 292 of the book THE SPEARHEAD, THE WORLD WAR II HISTORY OF THE 5TH MARINE DIVISION by Howard M. Conner, published by Infantry Journal Press, Washington DC in 1950.
After the war, Edward Sloan came back but almost immediately broke relations with his family and was last seen by them in 1946. Nobody ever knew what happened to him until the Social Security Death Index came out and showed that he had died in Iowa in 1978.
Even then, it almost seemed that he was concealing his identity, because he is listed in the Social Security Death Index only as E. Sloan, not as Edward Sloan. His family reports that on his death bed he was asked to reveal who his parents were and he refused to tell them.
He resided at 2675 Kenwood in Ottumwa, Iowa. He came to Ottumwa in 1946 because he was assigned to work there by a beer dirtributor. He was later manager of the Credit Bureau there for 25 years.

Social Security Number 356-03-6688, Issuing State, Illinois, issued Before 1951."I suspect that your uncle was an officer in the 5th Service Battalion, Captain Edward H. Sloan. I don't believe he received any decorations or awards, nor was he physically wounded in action.
" If you would like, I can provide you with his Unit Roster, which includes the names of some 47 officers and perhaps 891 enlisted men. these details are included in THE SPEARHEAD, THE WORLD WAR II HISTORY OF THE 5TH MARINE DIVISION. I think this gives you a pretty good handle for starters, or at least I hope so...
"For those who have an interest in Iwo, I highly recommend THE FIRST BATTALION OF THE 28TH MARINES ON IWO JIMA, by Robert E. Allen. Even though the primary focus is on the First Batallion of the 28th Marines, this is far and away the best day-by-day history that I have ever seen. It includes personal accounts and official reports, and complete muster rolls. If you want to know what Iwo was like, get your hands on this book.
"Another great book on this subject is IWO JIMA - LEGACY OF VALOR, by Bill D. Ross. Still another is THE BLOODY BATTLE FOR SURIBACHI, by Richard Wheeler, although it obviously focuses on only the first 4 or 5 days of a battle that last about 35-36 days.
"Best personal regards to all of you.

Sam Sloan-
The attached file has my notes on the Popham family. Jane Popham Graham, wife of William Mills Graham, was probably the daughter of Humphrey Popham & Betsey Hawkins. There are two main sources. (1) "The Popham Ancestral Lines", 1983, by Theron V. Morrison. (2) Information from Ronald Walker, 608 E. Ter, Kansas City MO, 64110, back in September 1996.
The notes from the Morrison book begins with John Popham who died about 1739 in Westmoreland County VA. The first section is an outline from Gilbert de Popham to Richard Popham who emigrated to Maryland in 1661. Morrison does not know if there was a connection between this Richard Popham and John Popham. The Morrison book does not name the last four children of Humphrey Popham. He only cites the 1820 census which lists four children born between 1800 & 1810.
Ronald Walker is a descendant of Nancy Popham & William Ray who were married in 1818 in Franklin County KY. Ezekiel Popham & Humphrey Popham were witnesses to this marriage - Ezekiel Popham also paid part of the marriage bond. The Pophams & Rays moved to Edgar County IL by the 1830s. There is a probate record for Ezekiel Popham in Edgar County IL. I have not seen this probate record, so I do not know the date of the probate or what it contains.
According to Jane Popham Graham's obituary, she was born in Virginia & was a Baptist. The Culpepper County VA Pophams are the only ones I can find in early VA records. They were Baptists. It is firm that the Ezekiel Popham of Edgar County IL was the son of Humphrey Popham & Betsey Hawkins. I am assuming that Ezekiel Popham of Edgar County IL is the same Ezekiel Popham who married Nancy Graham in Morgan County IL. You will note that I have Ezekiel Popham death in Oregon state, so I am not sure why there would be a probate record in Edgar County IL. Perhaps he still had property in IL.
At least this will give you something to work on ... Let me know if this gets to you ok as I am having some problems with my softward.

I neglected to tell you before, but I had a photograph of Jane Popham. It was in the suitcase of 30 old photographs. I remeber what she looked like. She had a very stern look on her face. She looked like the woman in the famous painting "American Gothic" by Grant Wood.
I did not know who she was. I had no idea that she was my great-great-grandmother, and for that reason I did not scan the photo.
It would still be at 2550 Webster Street San Francisco if the photograph has not been destroyed.

Ann MELVIN Milwain [Parents] 1 was born on 20 Apr 1778 in Stoneykirk, Wigtownshire, Scotland. She was christened on 26 Apr 1778 in Stoneykirk, Wigtownshire, Scotland. She died on 17 Feb 1875 in Biggsville, Illinois. She was buried in South Henderson Cemetery, Weir Family Plot. She married Hugh THOMSON on 2 Jul 1803 in Portpatrick, Wigtownshire, Scotland.
The family name was originally MILWAIN. It evolved to MELVIN over time in several branches of the family.
The 1851 census lists Ann Milven as living on Glenwell Street, Stranraer Scotland.
She lived to age 96.
There was also a Rachel Milvain living there who married John McRobert and gave birth to Thomas McRobert on 02 OCT 1792 in Stranraer, Wigtown, Scotland and to Mary McRobert 06 DEC 1796 Stranraer, Wigtown, Scotland. This Rachel Milvain seems likely to be the same person as Rachel Millvain who gave birth to Agnes McRobert on 07 DEC 1786 in New Luce, Wigtown, Scotland. It seems likely that Rachel Milvain was a relative of Ann Melvin or Milwain.
