May have been the brother of Jane Popham who married William M. Graham as his 2nd wife.

I believe I've found the two sons of Ezekiel & Nancy (Graham) Popham. The 1900 census for Boise, Ada County, Idaho has the following, parts are hard to read:

1900 census, Boise, Precinct No. 1, Ada County, ID, ed 1, page 3B, line 98
James Popham, head, born Dec 1836, 64, IL, VA, SC, [occupation none]
William T. Popham, brother, born Dec 1839, 60, IL, VA, SC [occpuation none]

Also the Idaho Death Index (1911-1951) listed James Popham, born 1836, died 7/19/1921, in Ada County, Certificate number 034518.

I have pages copied from a series of book on Obits from early Monmouth (Illinois) Newspapers. I can send you copies if your interested.

I have been searching for information on the Popham and McGregors this
evening and found your genealogy history on the web. I may have information
and I also am a bit confused with a date. First of all, Nancy Popham
McGregor came to the Washington Territory in about 1870 with her son's James
Popham and William Thomas Popham. All three had land in the area now known
as Houghton in Kirkland, Washington. This is on the east side of Lake
Washington, across from Seattle. The Pophams and their mother lived here
for about five years but because Nancy McGregor was in failing health, they
sold out and moved to California. They did write a few letters to Samuel
and Caroline French who came to the area in 1872. The Pophams and Nancy
McGregor had been the first white settlers and lived alone for two years
before the French's moved to the area. Mrs. McGregor was reported to be
starved for company and Caroline French and she became good friends. The
land records are recorded on the BLM (Bureau of Land Management) website.
Mrs. French eventually received word that Mrs. McGregor had died. It has
always been believed in the Kirkland area that she died in California. And
it would have been in 1875 or a little latter. I see you have her death as
after 1860 in Oregon. Kirkland history knows nothing of a J. Ann Popham and
we wonder if she died or married. Also, Mr. Ezekiel Popham is thought to
have died in August 1847. Mrs. Popham then is thought to have remarried in
August 1847. Is this correct? And do you have any of the details of Mr.
Pophams death? Do you have any photos. Kirkland Heritage Society has no
photos of any of the Pophams.

Unfortunately the research for the book ended before records were transcribed or digitized and made available on the internet. Our Foundering Fathers was published in 1975. Our Foundering Fathers has been digitized and is available on the web. Census records and the BLM records also give dates and show that Nancy McGregor was living in 1870. Kirkland Heritage Society has diaries that will be transcribed eventually. These diaries were written by Harry and Samuel French, neighbors and friends of the Pophams and Mrs. McGregor. If they make any mention of your family when they are transcribed, I will send you the information. As for Oregon, one of our members is the Great Grandson of Joseph Lafayette Meek who was a rich history in Oregon. The Popham and McGregor families would have known him I am certain. Andrew Walker GRAHAM [Parents] was born in 1807 in Logan County, Kentucky. He died on 27 Jan 1875. He married Joranda Jane CORDRY.

s: Book "DAVID GRAHAM OF CHESTER COUNTY, S.C., AND HIS DESCENDANTS 1772-
1989" pages 172-173

Wife's name may have been Gartin since 2nd child was named that. She died about 1850.

Dear Sam,

I suspect that we are very distantly related. I could scarcely believe my eyes when I pulled up Andrew W. Graham's name from GenCircles. (Had I not received an email from GenCircles, advertising SmartMatching, I never would have found your entry. ) I am his great great granddaughter; I inherited the piece of "swamp land" that he bought from the state of CA in 1859. Although I know names and dates from the family bible, heretofore, I had been totally unable to find any record of him, aside from the five land patents he bought in MO during the 1840's. didn't know where the children were born. I figured that when I began working on that line, in earnest, that I would begin with those counties where he purchased land. Censuses indicate that Andrew W. was born in KY, although I had no firm birth year, nor did I know who his parents were. Andrew died out here in CA in 1875.

My great aunt said her mother's name was Joranda, but misspelled it. I couldn't find any Joranda among the many Cordrys listed at ancestral sites on the internet. I had come to the conclusion that Andrew's wife's name was not Joranda, but rather Zuranda. Zuranda's mother's name was Mary Garton. Then today, this. If you are at all interested in knowing of any more of Andrew and Joranda's children, I can certainly conribute that information. I have exact birth dates of all the children. It was his daughter, Martha Jane, born 7 Jan, 1846 who eventually came out to CA and became my great grandmother. HIs son, Tom, came out here with him. I still don't know where Andrew and Joranda were married, nor where she is buried. None of the MO or KY records I've searched have been fruitful. I would very much like to hear from you.

Sincerely,
Jeanne Turner

Sam,

Thank you for such a quick response. Four marriages (!) and different surnames do muddy the waters.
I am a genealogical novice, having begun only last summer. When Mom died, being an only child, I
inherited the property Andrew W. Graham purchased in the Sacramento Delta.I will share with you whatis in our family bible, and some family tradition. I have been working on ourColby line from NH, also onny mother's side so I've just scratched the surface on the Graham line - whichis why I was so glad to fiind
your information. I wish I had a GEDCOM to send you, but haven't worked on this line very much. I am
going to order a film of the David Graham book through our local history center.

We had no firm date for the birth of Andrew Walker Graham. Censuses indicate that he was born in
Kentucky about 1810. Your information indicates a birth date of 1807. As far as we know, he married
only once. The marriage date to Joranda Jane Cordry was 11 Aug 1840. I don't know where they were
married - KY or MO? The children's names will sound quite familiar. They are as follows:

Thomas P. b 27 AuAug 1841
Robert Mills b 28 OOct 1842
Hanah b 2 Aug 1843
*Mary M b 155 Apr 1844
Martha Jane b 7 Jan 1846
*Andrew J. 6 Jan 1847
*Nancy G. 7 Oct 1848

Mom also listed Mattathias Sala Graham b 16 Mar 1865. I have NO idea who his parents were - certainly
not Andrew Walker and Joranda. He must be a grandchild, born to one of Andrew's children.

The above does not check out with the *three children listed in the David Graham book, (but you can certainly
see the similarity of names!)

I know that Martha Jane was born 7 Jan 1846. She was my great grandmother. That makes Mary M's birthdate
in the book impossible. However, the 15 Apr is consistent - just two years off. Andrew Gartin's date is the same.
It might be that theAndrew J. in our information is inerror - that it should be Andrew G. The date fr from the bookfor Nancy says abt1849. Oct 184848 is abt 1849.

Meanwhile, while Joranda was having children, Andrew was securing MO land patents...

Following a meeting of our local genealogical society, I looked at the BLM GLO Records site and was able to
pull up land patents for Andrew W. Graham. I have no proof that this was the same Andrew W., but info from
the book on Andrew's children's Clinton County birth places would make me suspect that it is. I wonder
what became of the land when he left MO. Did it go to his children? Did he sell it?

1 May 1843 Clay--Platte Counties
1 May 1846 Buchanan Co
1 May 1846 Clinton Co.
1 May 1846 Buchanan,, Clinton Counties
1 June 1848 Clinton Co.
1 Jan 1849 Buchananan, Clinton Counties

All were cash sales.

Joranda died abt 1850 (no wonder!) and Martha Jane and Robert Mills went to livewith Jorandaa's brother "Liege".

I found Martha Jane on an 1860 census from Rochester Township, Andrew Co., MO,living wwith an Elijah Cordry.
Thomas P. might have come out to CA with Andrew. They show up together on the1860 Merrrritt Township, Yolo Co.,CA census. I did find a census for Robert and family one day when I was fooling around on Ancestry.com.
On 7 Apr 1859 Andrew bought 46 acres of "swamp land" from thestate of CA for $1//acre. I have the original
patent, as well as everybody's will, passing the land down to me. Itwas swamp land becauause the Sacramento delta hadno levees in those days. It is wonderful land, now. I own the small Graham/Berkenkammp acreage. My two cousins own the rest of the family (Colby) property. All is vineyard now, although it was in row crops when I was younger.

Andrew sold the acreage to Henry Adolph Berkenkamp for $10/acre,afterclearing o off many oak trees, 15 Sep 1864. Henry Adolph Berkenkamp b 3 Apr 1838,of Bielefeld,Germany, had come tothethe U.S. in 1855(to avoid mandatoryconscription) to a German settlement in MO.Hewas naturalized in 1861.. (Family bible and 1920 census info.)

Martha Jane came out to Merritt Island on a wagon train in 1868.She married d Henry (no marriage date). They settled onMerritt Island(Clarksburg), Yolo County CA and had six children of their own. Only one died at 2 1/2. They also adopted Daisy Cordry as their own. She was considered their daughter and inherited as did the others. In fact, it was she who stayed with Martha and Henry into their old age and took care of them.Myy family always said what a sweet person Daisy was. Daisy and her husband, Arthur Milham, appearon a census, lliving with Martha and Henry. Martha had severe rheumatoid arthritis.

Just recently I went through a family album and found a picture of Belle Cordry, one of Elijah's daughters who would have been Martha Jane Graham's cousin. The picture was taken in Sacramento CA, not in MO as the others were. This leads me to believe that Aunt Daisy was Belle's baby, born out of wedlock. Belle was out in CA long enough to nurse Daisy - and have her picture taken by a professional photographeer before returning to MO. Elijah had taken care of Martha after her mother died. In turn, did Martha adopt Elijah's daughters baby? Mom always said that Daisy had been born to a relative of Martha's but that nothing was ever said about it. I do not plan to pass my "researcher evaluation" along to Daisy's family because it can serve no useful purpose. It was just exciting, as a novice, to be able to put together the clues on the picture with existing family history. My genealogy instructor says that incest was also an issue in some families. I hope this was not the case with Belle.

Andrew died 27 Jan 1875. Thomas P. appears to have died between 1910 (census indicates him at 68, living with one of Martha's sons) and 1920 when he no longer shows up on a census. Martha died 11 Sep 1924.

I plan to go to the Old CIty Cemetery in Sacramento this summer and take some pictures. A volunteer, there, was most helpful in identifying the plots where the Grahams are buried.

My grandmother, Anna Belle Berkenkamp was the third child of Martha and Henry. She married Walter Baldwin Colby.
They had four children, my mother being one of them.

And that is my connection to Andrew Walker Graham. Our last genealogical society meeting dealt with DNA. Unfortunately, I have no brothers, so the Y factor is lost. I am curious about mitochondria. We have two daughters.

I am curious as to which line you are from, since we are in the same ggeneration of descendants from David. Where do you live? From the time on your email, I'm guessing back east - unless you are a night owl.
If you want anymmore information from me, I will try to supply it.

From you it appears that Andrew W. Graham started a new family out there.

One problem has always been that his father, who was sometimes Andrew
Graham and sometimes Andrew Grimes, was married four times and nobody can
agree which child came from which wife. I hope some day to solve this

Could you please send me any information you have on descendants of Andrew

Robert COULTER 1 was born in 1723 in Gabinheough, Tyrone, Ireland. He died in 1783 in Chester County South Carolina. He married Mary STUART before 1753 in , , Ireland.

Left Scotland 1746-47 after the battle of Culloden. Fought on the side of Bonnie Prince Charles. Seems a price was put on his head so he left Scotland.

Much of the information about the Coulter Family was obtained from Mrs. Frances E. Coulter, Route 2, Box 73, Coulterville, IL 62237, the widow of Mr. Willis B. Coulter, born 1912 and died in Coulterville in 1983. The following history was prepared by his great grandfather's brother, George Fleming Coulter (1807-1889).

"The first Coulter of our family, of whom we have any account, was a Norman and came over to England with William-The-Conqueror. Some of his family intermarried with the descendants of James Orr, of Bally-Black, Ireland, who died in the year 1627, and Janet McClement, his wife, who died in 1630.

Robert Coulter, a descendant of this Coulter, and Mary Stuart, a descendant of the royal house of Stuart, were married in the year (date lost). They left Gabinheough, in County Tyrone, Ireland, a long time before the American Revolution, with a son named Robert Stuart, who was four years old. Robert Coulter and his wife lived and died in Chester County, South Carolina. He, being too old to go into the American army, was hidden in the swamps the greater part of eight years to save his life from the Tories. His son, Robert Stuart Coulter, was a soldier in the American army all through the war of the American Revolution. He was impressed with the battle of Eutaw Springs and often spoke of it. He married Margaret Fleming, daughter of George Fleming, of noble English and Welsh family of Philadelphia and Sidneh Rosine, a lady of Swedish origin.

George Fleming, a native of England, sailed from Ireland for America with a gentleman named Kelso. They were men of wealth and George Fleming belonged to the aristocracy, his family crest being a guantledted hand and a flaming sword. The ship they sailed on was wrecked three miles from the American coast (what is not known). A day or two before the wreck a boy on the ship said he was troubled about a dream he had had the night before -- he dreamed that a rat bit off his big toe. During a terrific storm the vessel was driven on the rocks. The boat's crew tore up planks and made a raft and put off, leaving the passengers to their fate. George Fleming and his friend emptied their chests and their gold (a large amount) overboard and lashed their chests together and, tying a rope to them, heaved them overboard. They asked the boy who had had the dream to jump into one of the chests but could not prevail on him to try, but he said, "I'll hold the rope for your." Fleming jumped and caught the chests, although he was large and heavy. Kelso, the more active of the two, jumped and missed them and sank to rise no more. The boy went down with the wreck. Fleming floated to shore as the tide was coming in. One good swimmer swam to shore. One woman with two children drifted to shore on the quarterdeck. One of the children was dead. Only one of them was her own. The long-boat had been lost on the voyage. When the storm arose, the Captain sent out a boat for a Pilot but it was never heard from again.

George Fleming went first to Charlestown, South Carolina, and afterwards to Virginia, where he bought convicts from England. In Virginia he became acquainted with and married a Mrs. Brown, whose husband and child had been killed by Indians. She was the Sidneh Rosine before mentioned. George Fleming was a widower, with one son named James, when he met Mrs. Brown.

Mary STUART [Parents] was born in 1729 in Gabinheough, Tyrone, Ireland. She died in Gabinheough, Tyrone, Ireland. She married Robert COULTER before 1753 in , , Ireland.

One researcher writes:

"The bad news is that our Mary Stuart was just plain Mary Stuart, not the Queen of England."

They had the following children:

F i Mary Ann COULTER was born in 1752. She died in 1824.
M ii Archibald COULTER was born in 1753. He died in 1824.
F iii Margaret COULTER was born in 1755. She died in 1792/1796.
F iv Elizabeth COULTER was born in 1758.
M v Robert Stuart COULTER was born in 1760. He died on 4 Sep 1821.

John Matthew GLEGHORN 1 was born in 1770/1775. He died in 1830/1840 in Lincoln County, Tennessee. He married Elizabeth GRAHAM in 1794 in Chester County South Carolina.

"Attached is a text file on the family line of John McKee (died in Chester County SC, fall of 1794). This John McKee may possibly have been related to your Janet McKee Mills. As you can see from the text, Adams Mills named as one of the excutors to the will of John McKee. Some of the children of John & Nancy McKee moved with the Grahams to the area of Todd County KY. Martha B. McKee married Robert C. Graham, son of Andrew Graham. William McKee was named as one of the excutors to the will of Adams Mills, along with Matthew Graham & Robert C. Graham. John McKee was appointed guardian to two of Andrew Graham's children - Nancy Graham & Thomas P. Graham. Nancy Wilson, wife of John McKee, was the sister of Janette Wilson, wife of Matthew Graham (son of Andrew Graham) - children of John Wilson & Martha. I have more information on this Wilson family if your interested. As you can see there was a close association between this line of John McKee (died 1794) with the Grahams & Mills family."
