Helen SUMNER [Parents] 1 was born on 3 Aug 1825 in Boston, Mass.. She married Charles Antonio Rapallo on 28 Oct 1852.

They had the following children:

M i Edward Sumner Rapallo was born on 15 Sep 1853 in Cambridge,Massachusetts.

Attended Columbia University and is pictured as a member of the rowingteam (crew) in a photograph at the Columbia University Club.
F ii Rosalie Rapallo was born in 1856.
F iii Florence Rapallo was born in 1860. She died in Nov 1928 in New York, NY. She was buried in 1928 in Hope Farm Cemetery.

In New York city in the early 1900's, Episcopal Bishop David H. Geerbecame aware of the need for more homes for those Protestant children wholacked sufficient or proper care. The few homes that existed wereovercrowded. The bishop turned to three women, one of whom was MissFlorence Rapallo, to look into the situation for him. He had known herepreviously as a worker at St. Bartholomew's Parish House. The women spentseveral months at Children's Court, concluding that a place forProtestant children was indeed needed.

In October 1906 "Hope Farm, a Protectory for Protestant Children" wasestablished. In January 1907 the first children and staff members movedin. From 1919 to 1923, Miss Rapallo was in charge of City House on 58thstreet in New York City. City House was used for offices and bedrooms forHope Farm staff when they had business in N. Y. Occasionally olderchildren from Hope Farm lived there while attending school in the city.

It was probably in 1923, when her city job ended, that Miss Rapallo movedto Hope Farm. The record says, "Although a trained social worker had beenadded to the staff, Miss Rapallo was unique and her contacts with thechildren most valuable. She saw only the good in every child; each was aprecious individual in her sight. "Her death in November 1928 was a greatloss to the school.

Miss Rapallo's sister, Julia Rapallo Sloan, had given City house to HopeFarm. Just before Miss Rapallo's death, this same sister had promised tobuild a cottage at Hope Farm in Florence's honor. Rapallo Cottage wasopened in January 1930 and was occupied by 20 to 22 boys, plus ahousemother and an assistant. It was a fitting memorial for a person whowas so devoted to Hope Farm and the children.

The cottage was located on the road that runs behind the chapel along thewoods, and turns across the meadow to Griffith Drive. It stood at theturn in the road, which is still called Rapallo road. Unfortunately, someyears later Rapallo Cottage had a fire and was later torn down.

Julia Rapallo Sloan, donor of the City House and Rapallo Cottage, wasEdith Sloan's grandmother. Her daughter, Edith Sloan Griscom, who hadworked in Newfoundland under Dr. Grenfell, brought home with her a 12-year old boy, Leonard Coates, and placed him in Hope Farm. With suchfamily connections, it is no wonder that our Edith should have become amissionary and social worker and should now live here.
