Daniel was a county commissioner for 1 term and became trustee of thePine Street Methodist Episcopal church in 1825. He was also active in thereconstruction of that church in the mid 1840's (see below). Hisinterest in politics started as that of a democrat who changed torepublican later. According to F. H. McElrath, Daniel built two sectionsof the Lycoming canal and used the profits to buy a farm in Williamsport.

According to Robert "Robin" Strebeigh's letter to Julian Sloan March 3,2002, "The Strebeighs were form early on well off, Daniel inheritingeventually the family forge on their Lycoming County, Pennsylvania farm.It was one of the largest forges, perhaps the largest, in the country.Forges, before the Industrial Revolution, were the "factories" of theirday. And Daniel's was the principal source of the Strebeigh fortune. After the war of 1812, in which the British demonstrated thevulnerability of our coastal north-south highways, it was decided moresecure routes were needed. That concern, and the Manifest DestinyDoctrine, calling for expansion to the west, led to the greatcanal-building era. And it was the Strebeigh forge that created most ofthe fittings for the canals' locks.

Next to the Lycoming Presbyterian church in age, comes the Pine StreetMethodist Episcopal church. Methodism was introduced here in 1791. In thepioneer cabin of Amariah Sutton, which stood near the present barn ofHon. R. J. C. Walker, West Fourth street, the first society in thecounty was formed in the autumn of 1791. May 6th of this year the circuitof Northumberland was formed and Richard Parriott and Lewis Browningappointed preachers in charge.

The subsequent meeting did not take place until October 27, 1825, when "amajority of the trustees agreed to appoint two more trustees. DanielStrebeigh and John Smith were appointed." The meeting adjourned to meetNovember 3d at the office of J. Tallman. From the minutes it appears thatJeremiah Tallman, Alexander Smith, George Roberts, William Wilson, HenryLenhart, Daniel Strebeigh, and John Smith composed the board of trustees. The next meeting recorded is under date of July 30, 1827, when, JohnSmith having declined to serve, Joseph S. Williams was appointed in hisplace. Nothing more appears to have been done, until October 20, 1828,when a meeting was held and Charles Low and John Laverty were appointedadditional "trustees of the Methodist
Episcopal church in Williamsport. " The board now consisted of JeremiahTallman, H. Lenhart, Daniel Strebeigh, Joseph S. Williams, WilliamWilson, and the two names just added.

The building project still languished. The next meeting was held, August29,. 1832, when Laverty and Lenhart resigned. Little more was done. Inthe mean time a small brick church seems to have been built, for at ameeting held. January 6, 1836, Rev. James Sanks was elected president andJasper Bennett secretary, when John Smith and James Elliott were electednew trustees to fill up the
board; and it was unanimously voted "that a parsonage house be built onthe back part of the lot on which the Methodist meeting house stands inthe borough of Williamsport; provided that the old Lycoming meeting houseshall be, given to aid in such building, and that a sufficientsubscription to defray the balance of the expense be obtained." At thismeeting William Wilson, Daniel Strebeigh, and James Elliott wereappointed a committee to "wait on the trustees of the old Lycomingmeeting house for the purpose of obtaining their consent that theirbuilding should go to aid in the erection of a parsonage house inWilliamsport." At a subsequent meeting the committee reported that theyhad obtained the unanimous consent of the trustees that "the old churchshould go to aid in building the parsonage in Williamsport."

In. course of years the quaint little one-story brick church became toosmall and the question of building a larger one was started. It appearsfrom the minutes that Apollos Woodward offered a lot, in 1842, on whichto build a now church, but the trustees declined his proposition. Sometime in January, 1843, the lot on which the original church was erectedwas conveyed by Pompey and Elizabeth
Friday to John Smith,, Daniel Strebeigh, George Slate, and Joseph S.Williams, trustees, in consideration: of $550, and the following year theold brick church was taken down and the present one erected. Since thattime it has been enlarged and greatly improved, and a brick parsonageadjoining it on the north, added. In 1843 a charter incorporating thechurch was obtained by George Slate and
John Smith, who were appointed a committee for that purpose.
