Roger Sumner [Parents] 1 was born in 1632 in Bicester, England. He died in 1698 in Milton, MA. He married Mary Josslyn on 6 May 1657 in Lancaster.
After moving to Lancaster Roger formed a church and became the first andonly deacon of this church for 16 years, and seems to have been veryprominent in the new settlement
Lancaster was attacked and destroyed in King Philip's War on February 10,1676, and after this dreadful affair, he moved with his family to Milton,MA, where in 1682, he was chosen deacon of the church, being admittedNov. 20, 1681. He had been made freeman of the colony of Mass. His housein Milton was situated on the east side of Brush Hill, a short distancefrom the house owned by Manasseh Tucker, who married his daughter,Waitsell. Roger built the house, and it is still owned and occupied bythe Sumner family. On December 14, 1700, an inventory of the estate ofRoger Sumner was taken, and Mary, his widow, was given as her share, theold end of the dwelling, while Waitsell was given "one-third part of thegarret in the new end of the dwelling-house, and other estate."
