Petrus Elmendorf served as town trustee as magistrate, supervisor,sheriff and surrogate for several terms. His widow, Molly, was left withconsiderable property, and during the Revolution was a woman of affairsand influence. While the tea tax troubles were brewing in 1770 she andher son John were given charge of the existing supply. some of the womenof Kingston became desperate
for some and took forcible possession of Molly Elmendorf's house orstore, seizing what they wished and leaving payment.

Petrus Edmundus and Molly Elmendorf's children numbered 10, of whom sixgrew to maturity. their daughters married into the Bleecker family ofAlbany, the Ray family of New York and Bruyns of Kingston. One daughterof the Bleeckers married Gov. Horatio Seymour, and another Charles EdwardDudley, state senator and mayor of Albany. Mrs. Dudley gave $105,000 tofound Dudley Observatory at Albany. The Bruyns became connected with thefamily of Judge Hasbrouck, member of congress and president of RutgersCollege. Petrus Edmundus Elmendorf, Jr. married a Van Rensselaer ofAlbany.

Peter Zabriskie was a resident of Hackensack, Nj, and highly respected inall the affairs of his native town. A man of generous nature,forward-looking and consequently a leader in his sphere. Before he waswell out of his young manhood, he was elected one of the Freeholders in1754, reelected in 1755, 1762-65. He was elected one of the Justices ofthe Peace for Bergen Co. in 1765 and reelected in 1768-9, 1770, 1772-76.This civil office in New Jersey was so important in Colonial days thatwhoever held it then is now considered an eligible ancestor formembership in the Society of Colonial Dames of America... Although anelderly man, Peter Zabriskie, Esq. is given the honor of Chairman, June25, 1774, at a meeting of the Freeholders and inhabitants of the Countyto frame patriotic resolutions. These resolutions were a strong in favorof the patriot's cause as they were against tyranny. He was appointed amember of the Committee of Correspondence between the Counties of NewJersey, and as such is an eligible ancestor for membership in the NewJersey State Society, Sons of the American Revolution. He was athorough-going patriot and merited the full confidence of General GeorgeWashington, who while in Hackensack, made his headquarters at the privateresidence of Peter Zabriskie: this house was later known as the "MansionHouse", Hackensack, NJ. His worthy name has been handed down through theElmendorf family, and all his descendents may well cherish pride in thissterling ancestor.
