Rusudan Goletiani: Fantastic Result in New York Super Summer Action Open

Rusudan Goletiani, age 19, who has won three world chess championships in various age groups and who arrived in America from her native Georgia on May 12, achieved a fantastic result in the New York Super Summer Action Open by defeating a grandmaster rated 2608, drawing a grandmaster rated 2609 and defeating an International Master rated 2546, all in the same tournament.

This must be among the most remarkable achievements by any woman chess player in history (not counting the achievements by Judit Polgar, of course).

Her result in the tournament was ruined by her last round loss to master Boris Privman (2287), but still scoring 2 1/2 out of 3 against such highly rated players is a remarkable achievement.

In her game against Grandmaster Darmen Sadvaksov, Rusudan says that she had a bad game in the final recorded position. Later, however, her position got better and she was winning, but then she blundered a rook and was lost.

However, her opponent offered her a draw, because both of their flags were falling. She accepted.

Rusudan says that she rarely offers her opponent a draw, because she does not think it is a good idea.

(I have never heard a strong player say that.)

I asked Rusudan how she is able to achieve such good results when I have never seen her study chess. She also does own a chess set. She says that it is true: She has never studied chess. I am sure that playing unorthodox openings helps make this possible. (She usually plays an early b3 with white and an early b6 with black). It is also possible that Rusudan is just naturally brilliant.

The New York Super Summer Action Open was a small but incredibly strong event. It had only 14 players but was a Grand Prix event, so many strong players played to get the grand prix points and a shot at the $25,000 in Grand Prix prizes. The tournament was so strong that even though Rusudan Goletiani is rated 2425, she was in the bottom half of the tournament and played a grandmaster rated 2609 in the first round.

Steve Immitt directed. The tournament was held at the Marshall Chess Club on July 8.

Here are the games by Rusudan Goletiani. Please note however that these games were played under sudden death rules, so in some of the games the last moves were not recorded. Her games against Grandmasters Blatny and Sadvaksov and against NM Privman went much longer. In the final recorded position against Blatny, she has a clearly winning position, effectively a pawn ahead in a rook and pawn ending.
