Gregory Serper Wins 1999 World Open Chess Championship

Gregory Serper has won the 1999 World Open Championship in a blitz play-off after ten grandmasters tied for first in the regular nine-round tournament with scores of 7-2.

The ten GMs who tied for first were Jaan Ehlvest, Joel Benjamin, Igor Novikov, Gregory Serper, George Timoshenko, Alex Yermolinsky, Vladimir Akopian, Boris Gulko, Alexander Shabalov, and Alexander Fishbein. There were 1470 entries, 83 more than last year, and a total of $200,000 in prizes were paid.

The last round of the regular tournament ended in a late-night struggle between Alexander Ivanov and Vladimir Akopian. Ivanov had a knight for two pawns and appeared to have good winning chances, in which case he would have won the $15,000 first prize clear. However, Akopian slowly outplayed Ivanov and won instead. Meanwhile, most of the players who had scored 7-2, believing that they had probably tied for second, headed for the bar.

When it turned out that all ten had tied for first instead, they had to be rousted out and brought back for the traditional playoff. At first, only three of the ten could be located and one of them, Akopian, tired from his long struggle against Ivanov, declined to play. Then, another top grandmaster showed up and then another. Finally seven of the ten arrived. After it was determined that the remaining two, Igor Novikov and George Timoshenko, had checked out and left, and after Bill Goichberg had refused to decide the winner on tie-breaks, the remaining seven surprisingly voted to play a round robin, as opposed to a quicker knock-out.

The results of the round robin five-minute event were that Gulko and Serper tied for first with 4 1/2 - 1 1/2, followed by Yermolinsky with 4-2, Benjamin, Shabalov and Ehlvest with 2 1/2 - 3 1/2 and Fishbein last with 1/2 - 5 1/2.

A one-game playoff was held, the rules being that white got six minutes on the clock, black got only five, but black got draw odds.

Serper as black put this provision to good use by trading down into a drawn rook and pawn endgame which gave him the title of 1999 World Open Chess Champion, plus an additional one percent of the prize fund.

Here are games from the play-off. These games will not be available from any other source, because I wrote down these moves myself.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

I played in the Open Section of the World Open and one of my games was against Alexander Fishbein, one of the ten grandmasters who tied for first. (Fishbein defeated Tony Miles in the last round). I played poorly in this event and scored 3-6. Most of my opponents were masters rated higher than me. In spite of my poor play, at least five of my games were published in the tournament bulletins, perhaps because of the short and violent nature of my games (and also no doubt due to the fact that I have a clear handwriting, easy to read). Here is my game against Grandmaster Fishbein and my other games from the 1999 World Open.
