William LEE [Parents] 1 was born on 11 Aug 1776 in Thoenlaw, Inverness, Scotland. He died on 10 Sep 1849 in Philadelphia, PA. He married Elizabeth THOMPSON on 14 Sep 1806 in Of Philadelphia, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Extensive family history is on http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com
In early life he was a shepherd and tended flocks in the Highlands, but was sent to the Lowlands to be educated. At the age of 16 William went to London, England and stayed with his uncle William Lee, the straw-bonnet merchant. Four years later, in 1796 he immigrated to America under an engagement with the Bingham Theatrical Co. in Philadelphia. However, by the time he arrived, the company had failed in business. He found employment copying plays with the Chesnut St. Theater. He taught in the city schools of Philadelphia for 20 years. He was a real estate agent and speculated in real estate himself. He belonged to the St. Matthews Society for Scotsmen in Philadelphia and to a society which promoted agricultural practices. He organized the first geological society in Philadelphia on Dec. 15, 1843. He became a naturalized citizen of the U.S. October 9, 1802. On September 14, 1806 he was married to Elizabeth Thompson by Rev. Turner of the Episcopalian Church of Philadelphia. To this union was born eight children. On January 1817, August 1821, and August 1823 William Lee paid the sexton of the First Presbyterian Church for the burial of three children.
In 1811 the family lived at 69 Cherry Alley, Philadelphia. In 1822 they lived at 18th and Chestnut, Philadelphia.
There is an entry in the 1820 PA Federal Census on page 017 with i.d. number
PAS2a745832 for a William Lee in Philadelphia County in Chestnut and Walnut
Ward. This is probably him. Unfortunately, these early census reports listed
only head of household and little else.In 1821 he went into the ice business (was one of the first to do so) and
employed a large number of men. In the winter the ice was cut in nearby ponds
and the Schuylkill River and packed in large storehouse for warm season use.
He was also a shipping merchant in the ice business. (The ice was retailed by
the peck.) In 1831 he leased the ice house to Malier then to Penn for two
years. On July 6, 1824 he sold John Conard 1916 acres of land in Great Egg Township,
Gloucester Co.(later part of Atlantic Co.) New Jersey (the farm where his
father lived in his lifetime) and took in exchange 20,800 acres in Buck
Valley, Bedford Co. but mostly in Fulton Co. Pennsylvania. (Fulton Co. was
created from eastern Bedford Co. in 1850.) This tract of land, known as
"Sarah's Manor" was then valued at 12 1/2 cents per acre. Later, he bought
more land including in 1828, 210 acres known as the "Gap Tract" from Moses
Gordon. Eventually, William owned approximately 25,000 acres. He intended to
make a sheep ranch out of this land and go into the wool business. In January
1830, Samuel Powell became agent for Mr. Lee in Buck Valley succeeding James
Mckee. Mr. Powell dated his letters from Frog, Dec. 31, 1833. Mr. Lee took
charge of the ice house again in 1837, with Alexander Lee and William McKibbin
assisting. Samuel Powell ceased to be agent for Mr. Lee in the valley and his
power of attorney was withdrawn. William Lee's son, Alexander, who had many
times extemperated (sworn off drink) was sent to the valley on promise of
temperance and attention to his father's business. In September, 1846 Mr. and
Mrs. McKibbin went to the valley to observe and report back to William
concerning Alexander conduct. In October of 1845, the previous year, Margaret
and James Lee had also visited Alexander. They did so in the first two horse
vehicle ever to be in the valley. On April 2, 1847, upon receiving reports of
Alexander's behavior, William withdrew his power of attorney "on account of
drink and waste of property."Mr. William Lee in his character was singularly shrewd, industrious, and
possessed indomitable energy and great decision. All his boys offended him by
the lack of these characteristics. In 1835 he became partially blind. He had
several operations for cataracts, without remedy. He never read or wrote
(except his name) after January 1835. His daughter, Margaret, read to him and
wrote all of his business correspondence. He gave her the power of attorney
to sign checks for him on the F & M Bank of Philadelphia. By 1835 he had
sufficient sight to walk streets alone but in 1839 he was run down by a stage
coach. Following this he was always attended by somebody. By 1845 blindness
was total. On March 22, 1846 his wife died. In the next three years he
suffered three paraletic strokes: September 14, 1847; May 1, 1849; and
September 8, 1849. He died September 10, 1849 at the age of 73 and was buried
beside his wife in Ronaldson Cemetery in Philadelphia.William's Last Will and Testament: The 25,000 acres of land was equally
divided between Margaret, Sarah Isabelle and Alexander. To these daughters he
left the land to disperse of as they pleased. Alexander's share was put in
trust and when his children became of age it was divided among them. James
Lee received land in Philadelphia. Alexander and James also received the
interest on $6,000 capital each which amounted to $360 a year. William, who
returned from Ohio in order to obtain his inheritance received only $1000 in cash.Info from Lee Family History and IGI.

James LEE [Parents] was born about 1744 in Invernesshire, Scotland. He died about 1822 in Probably Philadelphia. He married Isabelle DAVIDSON about 1775 in Of Invernesshire, Scotland.
Other marriages:MUNRO, Rosanna
James was a tenant farmer on the land of the Earl of Murray (Morary?). James married Isabelle Davidson, the daughter of a Clansman of the Davidson Clan. James Lee seems to have moved about in Scotland and the USA. He at one time lived in Crowarty in Invernesshire, not far from the east coast of Scotland. Later, he lived in Mainshire, a neighboring county. About the time his son, William, left home, he was living at Darnaway or Darnay Farres. His letters were dated from there June 3, 1801 to February, 1802. He then removed to Thornlaw (Thornlass?), but was still a tenant farmer on the land of the Earl of Murray.
It seems he had not been very prosperous the few years before migrating to America. His son, Alexander, writes of driving oxen and working in the garden of the Earl for 3 pounds? per annum. In 1808, Alexander (as did some of his half brothers previously) went to London, England, to live with his uncle William Lee. About this time James Lee wrote to his son, William in the USA, in regard to coming to America and in the letter mentions that Mr. Davidson, William's maternal grandfather was still living. James Lee had a sale of his goods in June 1811. In July 1811 at the age of 68 years he left Thornlaw to come to America. There were eight in the emigrant family, namely, James Lee and second wife, Rosanna, and their children, Margaret, David, Jane and Rosanna; and his son, John and wife, Jane. They sailed from Greenrock and arrived in Wilmington, North Carolina, July 27, 1811. (For some reason, perhaps plague, they did not land at Philadelphia.) They went to the Philidelphia, Pennsylvania home of his son, William, (who had immigrated to America in 1796) afterward moving to a farm 0f 1980 acres belonging to William at Great Egg Harbor Township, Gloucester County, New Jersey.(In 1837 the eastern portion of Gloucester County became Atlantic County. Since then, Egg Harbor Township has been in Atlantic County.) They spent their summers on the farm, but went to Philadelphia for the winters.
All the Lees both in Scotland and the USA were Presbyterians although James became a member of the Baptist Church while at Great Egg Harbor, N.J. because there was no Presbyterian church there. This parish still exists although in a newer church building a few dozen feet from the original site. James died about 1822 (age about 78) and may have been buried in the N.J. church yard (unless he died while wintering in Philadelphia).

Isabelle DAVIDSON.Isabelle married James LEE about 1775 in Of Invernesshire, Scotland.
She was the daughter of a Clansman of the Davidson Clan. After she bore four children to James Lee, she died and he remarried.
There are two possible IGI birth entries for Isabelle. Both are in Inverness, Inverness. One is a christening on 10 Sep 1743 with parents John Davidson and Janet Fraser. The other is a christening on 23 Apr 1748 with parents William
Davidson and Marjory McPherson.Info from Lee Family History and IGI.

but unfortunately he died soon thereafter.

Private George THOMPSON was born on 10 Jul 1739 in Scotland. He died on 15 Aug 1780 in Delaware River NJ/PA USA. He married Sarah STEVENSON on 23 Jun 1770 in Old Swedes Church Philadelphia, Pa..
My great-great-great-great-grandfather Private George Thompson died during the American Revolutionary War while crossing the Delaware River with George Washington, but he did not die during the famous crossing which took place on Christmas Day, 1776, which led to the Battle of Trenton. Instead, my ancestor died during a much less well known crossing which took place on 15 August 1780 while George Washington was retreating. My ancestor is listed in the DAR Patriot Index Centennial Edition Part III, (Washington: NSDAR, 1990) page 2922, and also at Pa. Militia. Pa. archives 6th Ser. Vol.1 P. 223 Vol 13S2 p. 226. Alphabetical List of Soldiers. Vol.3S2 p.43 Oath of Allegiance.
I cannot be certain of his date of birth. The DAR says he was born between 1745 and 1750. However, a website says he was born 10 July 1739 in Scotland. I cannot find him in the IGI. Since he was just a private, the later date seems more likely
He married Sarah Taggart, who bore him six children, but the first three died in infancy. Taggart was her married name. Her maiden name was Sarah Stevenson and she was born in Ireland. This explains why the Taggart Family Group was not to able find her. After he died, she married again. Her third husband was Robert Cunningham.
Private George Thompson died 15 Aug 1780 while crossing the Delaware River with Washington's Army during the retreat through New Jersey. He is listed in the DAR Patriots Index. He was a private in the Pa. Militia. Pa. archives 6th Ser. Vol.1 P. 223 Vol 13S2 P. 226. Alphabetical List of Soldiers. Vol.3S2 P.43 Oath of Allegiance. In Philadelphia, he lived on 6th Street near Cherry, in the Mulberry Ward West.
DAR Patriot Index Centennial Edition Part III, (Washington: NSDAR, 1990) page 2922 says the following:
George: b 1745-50 ST d 8-15-1780 m Sarah Taggart Pvt PA
Please note: The Patriot index does not give his last name except to state that all names with a similar sound are grouped together. Thus, his last name could be spelled Thompson, Thamason, Thomasson, Tomson or Tompson. Since he was born in Scotland, I suspect that the correct spelling of his last name was Thomson.
According to a Lee family history the Thompson family came to America "soon after 1746". The account does not specify but they probably came from either Scotland or England. George was married to Sarah Taggart in Swedes Church, Philadelphia on June 23, 1770 and they had three children. George was a private in the Pennsylvania Regiment of Artillery in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. According to the Lee family history, he died crossing the Delaware River.
George Washington and portions of the Continental Army crossed the Delaware R. several times. Early in Dec 1776 they crossed during a retreat from defeats in New York across New Jersey to winter quarters at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania north of Philadelphia. On the windy, bitterly cold night of Dec 25, 1776 Washington and a force of about 1,500 crossed the Delaware R. and the next day successfully attacked the Hessian garrison at Trenton, NJ. Days later, when Washington received news that British general Cornwallis was moving a force to attack his rear he was forced to again retreat from New Jersey, recross the Delaware R. and return to Valley Forge. This retreat continued from Jan 6 to Jan 25 1777.
Generally, the Scots spell the name Thomson and the English prefer to spell it Thompson. However, through time and in the USA either spelling might emerge.
Sarah STEVENSON was born about 1750 in Ireland. She died in 1817 in Philadelphia. She married Private George THOMPSON on 23 Jun 1770 in Old Swedes Church Philadelphia, Pa..
