My wife's maiden name was Craig. I went to the National Archives branch in Phila. to see what I could find. In the 1900 census for Phila. I found a John Craig married to a Julia E. Craig. These were my wife's great grandparents. Living in their home was a Julia Lee, 80 years old, who was Julia Craig's grandmother. Also there was a George Lee, Julia Lee's son, and thus Julia Craig's uncle. All of these people were born in Pennsylvania, so obviously the story of their relationship to the general was unraveling quickly. I assumed that George Lee must have been Susan Lee's brother, Julia Lee was her mother, and thus Julia Craig was probably her daughter. The census also indicated that Julia had 5 children, so I knew that Susan and George had 3 other siblings.
On the Internet I found your website and came across the listing for James Lee married to Julia Anna Melick. When I saw that their children were Susan, George, William, Frank and Clara, I knew then that was the family I was researching! I returned to the National Archives on Wednesday armed with this new information, but I had very little success, in five hours of research, in finding any of these people in the censuses. I did find a lot of Mellicks (with two LLs) in Easton in Northampton County (not Northumberland), in 1860, and although I didn't find a Julia Anna, I did find, in three different families, a Clara, a William, and a George, all given names of three of Julia Anna Melick Lee's children. So I have a strong feeling that this was her family. They were all born in NJ, even 5-year-old Paul, so I'm not sure where to go with that.
Anyway, that's where I hit the wall and that's why I'd like to get my hands on that Lee Family History if it exists anywhere.
I don't have this research posted anywhere, so here is what I have:
