Chitralis including my friend Yahya

This picture was taken on September 9, 1978 in Reshun on my first visit to Chitral. I remember the date because I got married the next day.

The man in the background wearing the white shirt is Mohammed Yahya, who signed a financial guarantee to guarantee the marriage. This got Yahya into trouble later on when I was forced to divorce my wife and then her family sued Yahya for the money.

However, this photo is significant in another way. The man on the extreme right was killed in a terrible accident only a few months later. He was in a jeep filled with passengers which was going down the steep hill into the crevice which separates Upper Moroy from Lower Moroy. The brakes failed and the jeep tumbled into the gorge. All six passengers on the jeep were killed. The driver was uninjured. He repaired the jeep and started picking up passengers in it a few days later.

That man who is on the right had never in his life had his picture taken, except for the picture I took of him. His family had no remembrance of him. One of the sons of that man approached me a year later and asked me to make a blowup of the picture so that they could frame on the wall.

When I returned to America, I found the negative and had the picture printed in large size.

The next time I returned to Chitral, I could not find the man who had requested the picture.

On a subsequent trip, I found some Chitralis who were cargo handlers and maintenance men living together in the workers quarters next to Karachi Airport. One good thing about Chitralis is they always live together in groups. If you find one, you find them all.

The Chitralis at Karachi Airport invited me to spend the night in their home. I showed this picture to them. One of the men identified himself as one of the men in the picture and a nephew of the man who died. Accordingly, I presented him with the picture, because I had never found the man, and still have not found the man, who originally requested this picture.
