I tried to explain to Kirsan that in order to be elected in America, a politician must kiss babies. I do not believe that he understood. His English is somewhat limited.

Kirsan Ilyumzhinov had just finished addressing the USCF Delegates meeting in Cherry Hill, New Jersey in which he spoke of his progress in having chess included in the Summer Olympics (NOTE: He said not the Winter Olympics, but the Summer Olympics). Kirsan was said to be in America for a meeting with Kofi Annan, Secretary General of the United Nations.

This photo was taken on Saturday, August 3, 2002 at the US Open Chess Championship in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. Photo is by Maxine Brady, wife of USCF Executive Board member Frank Brady.
