Larry Parr on the USA and Israel

Gentlemen,

Dr. Saidy is right about the extent of Jewish political contributions. This is one area in which money gets spent. Sam is wrong -- in some instances, unfortunately wrong -- about the influence of Fundamentalist Christians.

I am one of those who do not consider eschatological, millenarian theology to be lunatic stuff. It is actually mainstream Christian theology held to be true by many brilliant minds, including Reinhold Niebuhr and, for that matter, most of the great Catholic fathers.

Having said the above, the true lunatic idea is that Iraq is any threat to the United States. It is not even much of a threat, in truth, to neighboring Iran. Not any more, at least. Bush hit what could be an historical low among all U.S. presidents when lying outright that Iraqi drones were or were about to become threats to the United States. Not only a lie, but a stupid lie to boot. True, Eisenhower lied about the U-2, but it was not a malignant, idiotic lie. It was a lie told in the hope that Gary Powers and his plane had been blown completely to smithereens.

The greatest obstacle to peace in the Middle East is American aid to Israel. If we were to take a hands-off position, the two sides would reach an arrangement in a year or two: Israel would know that it had no choice, and the Arabs would know that if pushed to the economic wall, Israel would launch the much-hoped-for Armageddon.

My problem with the Falwell idea right now is engaging in temporal politics to promote Armageddon. This posture strikes me as an arrogant human imposition on what previous generations of Christians -- rigid Puritans, Ultramontane Catholics, canting Calvinists and sacrificing missionaries --had thought to be His territory.

Yours, Larry Parr
