Dr. Anthony Saidy on the USA and Israel

Sam's theological essay comports with my understanding, as a former vice-chair of the Coalition for Peace in the Middle East who has read the books of Grace Halsell and Paul Findley. Only the math is dubious -hence, Sam remains only a candidate master. Jewish Americans in fact are crucially generous in financing political candidates - without them, absent real campaign reform, the Democratic Party would collapse. The Israel Lobby, AIPAC, has been challenged legally for coordinating these contributions. Most recently, financing by remote Jews sank the re-election bid of five-term Georgia Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney, who had the temerity to say Palestinians have human rights and the Bush Administration had ample warning of the precise mechanism of Sept. 11. Sam also overestimates the number of Fundamentalist Christians in U.S., the highest figure for which I've ever seen is 70 million.

What has all this to do with chess? A lot. Ever since I was sent to Russia in 1960 to win the World Student Team Championship, encountering good peace-loving folks previously billed to me as "the enemy," I ceased to be a typical chauvinistic American. I developed friends from many countries and forever enlarged my perspective on the world. Unless my protesting people today, led by Nelson Mandela, manage to restrain him, Bush, in the pocket of Israel and the lunatic theology of the Falwellites, is about to obliterate the homeland and descendants of Caliph Omar, al-Adli and As-Suli. Gens Una Sumus indeed -and one must stand up for all the members of the human family. Iraq poses no threat whatsoever to the U.S. (but - flash - has the world's second-largest oil reserves). Send chess sets, medicines and food to Iraq - not bombs and soldiers. And, watching today's headlines, the same goes for North Korea.

-Anthony Saidy I.M.
