Nymphomania is defined as either a mental illness or a physical irritation which causes the female victim to want to have sexual intercourse with as many men as possible.
My vast experience in dealing with this subject comes with the 1 1/2 years when I was President of the Berkeley Sexual Freedom League in California in 1966-1967.
I organized 42 parties during this period. At almost every party I held, there was at least one girl who would do this (usually a different girl each time). She would come to the party with the obvious plan of having sexual intercourse with as many men as possible. Usually, she would have sexual intercourse with ten guys, and then quit.
The reason for the number ten was a combination of factors. I think the main reason was that the party would run out of men. A man has a limited capacity, unlike a woman. At the parties I held, with very few exceptions, all of the girls would eventually take off their clothing. This included even girls who had came just to watch and who stated that they had no intention of participating. Once they saw all the other girls take off their clothing, they would take off their own clothing too.
At my parties, about half of the girls would have sexual intercourse before the party was over, almost always with somebody other than the person with whom they came to the party. The average girl would probably do it with two or three guys.
This explains why a girl who wanted to do it with as many men as possible would run out of guys after she reached the number of ten.
Now: The question is: Were these girls nymphomaniacs?
My answer is: No.
In my view, they were just average, normal girls. Remember, these were revolutionary times. We were demonstrating against the War in Vietnam and things like that. The shackles of society were being thrown off. What better way to demonstrate their independence than to do it with as many men as they could?
Perhaps more importantly, birth control pills were just for the first time becoming widely available. Also, medicines were just being developed which cured almost all venereal diseases and, of course, the scourge of AIDS was two decades in the future.
So, there was suddenly no good reason why a girl should not have sex with multiple partners. Moreover, the girls felt safer at my parties. Nobody was going to hurt them or beat them up. However, they could never know what would happen if they went alone with a man to his room.
I decided to study this subject, as I was in the Department of Criminology at the University of California at Berkeley at the time. The Departmental Chairman, Dean Lohmann, gave me a tape recorder and I went out and taped interviews with many of the girls who had exhibited this behavior. I still had some of the tapes until 1994, when my brother had everything in my mother's house destroyed.
From all of these taped interviews with girls who had sexual intercourse with about 10 partners in one night at one party, I found that none of them were nymphomaniacs. To the contrary, they had, if anything, less sex drive than average, and certainly not more.
I became friends with most of these girls. I only actually had sex with one of them, by the way. What I found on the average was that they were 19-22 years old, above average in attractiveness, some were beautiful, and they were mostly Cal Berkeley students or recent graduates. They were obviously above average in intelligence.
What compelled them to go to a party and have sex with as many men as possible? The answer in every case was the same. Every one of these girls said that they had never had an orgasm with a man. They feared that they were frigid (although they never used that word). They were unhappy and frustrated about their inability to have an orgasm.
Therefore, they went to a party with the idea of having sexual intercourse with as many men as possible in the hope of finding that one man who could do it for them.
I found that these girls almost all had one religious background. They were Catholic. Why Catholic? All of them, including those who were not Catholic, had been raised in strict religious families where sex was condemned. The were taught that sex was evil and to feel guilty about it. For this reason, they could not enjoy sex or have an orgasm. For that reason, they would go to Sam Sloan's parties and have sex with as many men as possible.
This also answers one question I am often asked, which is why I would never tell my own children that sex is a bad thing.
Turning away from the girls who attended my Sexual Freedom League parties, which involved a special group at an unique time in history, and just looking at more average typical girls, it has been my observation that girls in America who have sex with a wide variety of partners are almost always girls who get no enjoyment out of sex. This may seem strange, but I find it logical. A girl who likes sex and has orgasms easily will be likely to settle on one partner and do everything to keep him happy, so as to keep him.
Those who do not like sex and get no enjoyment out of it will be forever searching for the man who can satisfy them and will become promiscuous.
One girl in particular I recall was named Michelle. She had an apartment in the Haight Ashbury in San Francisco. It was her apartment entirely, but it looked like a hippie crash pad. Jefferson Poland lived there and invited me there. I assumed that it was his apartment. It took me a long time to find out that it really belonged to Michelle, who had an office job. There were always five or six girls there and all of them were naked. I only had sex with one of them, however.
I wrote a letter from that apartment which was published in Time Magazine. If you will look through the Letters to the Editor in Time for the Summer of 1967, you will see a letter from Bert Kohl. Bert was a real person who lived in Michelle's apartment and had sex with all of the girls there. (I did not, because I was not aggressive with the girls like he was. Oh, how I wish I could relive those days). I wrote a revolutionary letter to Time, but I was afraid to sign it, so I got Bert to agree to use his name. The letter was published.
I asked Michelle how many men she had had intercourse with. Her answer was: Four thousand!
That is what she said. I said she was obviously joking and laughed it off.
Later, I realized that she was perhaps not joking. She had a reputation. She said that she had started this when she was 12 and she was 22 now. To reach 4,000, she needed to average only slightly more than one sex partner per day, an achievable number.
How common were girls like Michelle? Of course, they were rare, but it seemed that everybody knew one. I would commonly hear a story like this: There was this one girl in the high school. She went into the boys locker room after the big game and had sexual intercourse with every player on the boy's high school football team.
I even recently wrote a little story based on this theme. But, were these stories true, or was it that different versions if the same fanciful high school story was just making the rounds?
Sad to relate, in my own high school in Virginia, we did not have such a girl. However, we did have one girl with a certain reputation. I will not say her name, but I will say that she was a genuine preacher's daughter. One of my classmates from my graduating class told me recently that she thinks that the stories about that girl were true.
The movie "The Last Picture Show", which depicts a high school in the 1950s in a small town in Texas, has a scene involving a virgin girl who goes to a class party at a swimming pool, only to discover that all the other girls are naked. She is reluctant, of course. They get her to stand out on the diving board. They tease her and tell her to drop her pants. She is afraid, reluctant and does not know what to do. Finally she does it. She drops her pants. Her body is not shown but you see her panties hitting her ankles. It is clear that her virginity does not survive that night.
That to me is the sexiest scene I have seen in a movie. It is sexy me because I know from experience that it would work. You really could get a girl to drop her pants for the first time like that. I have put that scene in one of the screen plays I have written.
None of the girls who attended my Sexual Freedom League parties were prostitutes. All of them would have been grievously insulted if any one had offered them money. However, I had a few experiences with prostitutes in New York City.
It has been my observation and studies have confirmed that prostitutes never have orgasms from sex, especially not with their customers. Prostitutes are almost always lesbians and have sex with men only for the money it brings.
For one brief shining moment in early 1976, houses of prostitution became legal in New York City. Of course, prostitution itself was not legal, but rulings by the courts had made it impossible for the city to close a whorehouse down. As a result, dozens of little whorehouses sprung up all over mid-town Manhattan.
The biggest was called the "Pleasure Seekers Club" which was located on the southwest corner of 8th Avenue and 45th Street in New York City, on the Second Floor. The cost was $8 (eight dollars), an incredibly low price, even at that time. There were about 100 girls working there and you could have your pick for eight dollars. I later found out that they were from Colombia, South America. I found out from the files in Manhattan federal court that the owners of the Pleasure Seekers Club were later convicted under the white slave laws for international trafficking in women and sentenced to 10-20 years in federal prison.
Almost none of the girls at the Pleasure Seekers Club could speak much English, so I went mostly to other places, where white American girls worked and English was spoken. They were more expensive. They charged $10 for a girl, plus it was customary to tip the girl two dollars. I remember the exact time because in March 1975 I had been hit by a car and both of my legs had been broken. I was fortunate not to be killed. I was laid up for six months, before I could walk again. When I recovered my ability to walk a bit, I went to Iceland and stayed for six weeks. I returned to America in February 1976, to discover all of these whore houses newly open. I still had not fully recovered my ability to walk. I could not chase women, but I could slowly make it up the stairs to the whore house.
Even one year later, in early 1977, I still had difficulty walking.
Among the dozens of places open and handing out flyers on the street, I had two favorites. One was called The Derby Club and was in the diamond district at 78 West 47 th Street close to the corner of Sixth Avenue, on the second floor. The other was Her Place, which I believe was on 45th Street between Fifth and Sixth.
Some of these girls made an impression on me and have stuck in my mind. There was one at the Derby Club who said, "Oh, what lies we told our mothers when we were in high school." This was obviously not long ago. She was only about 19 and was just out of high school.
There was another at Her Place. She had done an accounting of her costs and expenses. Although the customers including myself paid $10 dollars to have sex with her, out of her cut, she had to pay for the room, for the sheets and even for the toilet paper. She had worked it out that she got $3.52 for each man she had sex with. She averaged 35 men a night, so she got $123.20 per night. She was not satisfied with this. She wanted to leave Her Place and go out on her own with private customers. Her plan was to get regular customers and to accommodate only 8 men a night, but she would charge them more so she could make the same money with less work.
I asked her if it is a lot of work to have sexual intercourse with 35 men per night. She said, "Sure. You get sore the first few nights, but you get used to it, and then it is OK."
Often, sitting around these places waiting, I would hear the girls talk to each other about how sore they were or were not, and how many customers they had had. They all seemed to average about 35 men per night. I remember one girl who was telling her compatriot, "I want to have a baby!" The other girl said, "So. Go ahead and have a baby." The first girl said, "But, I don't want to have anybody's baby. I want to know who the father of the baby is."
The way these girls worked is: they would take you to the room, tell you to undress and then leave you there alone. A few minutes later, they would come back. If you were not undressed, they would leave again. The second time they came back, if you were still not naked, they would say, "OK. Times up. You have to go."
This was their loophole. They knew that a police officer would never take off his clothing and, if he did get naked, he could not make an arrest under the rulings of the court. So, if you did not take your clothing off, she knew that you were a cop and would tell you to leave.
If you did get naked, she would tell you to lay down on your back and then she would immediately give you a blow job. As soon as you got an erection, she would get on top, put it in and start having intercourse. Within probably ten minutes, the deed would be done and you would be out the door and she would be getting ready for the next customer.
I knew that this was a volume business and I did not want to waste the girls' time, but I usually did try to talk to them a bit before doing the deed.
One girl at The Derby Club I asked how often does it happen that the man does not get an erection and cannot complete the act. She said that 98% of the men come inside of her. Only 2% fail. I was surprised. I was expecting her to say that half of the men could not do it. However, I note that at these places, the customers were predominantly young men, probably averaging age 25. A high percentage spoke Spanish.
I asked the same girl how she felt if the man did not get it up and could not complete the act of intercourse. She said that she did not like it. She felt insulted if the man did not cum inside of her.
This also surprised me. I never thought that a prostitute would feel insulted if her customer did not cum inside of her.
But the one I remember the most was not for what she looked like, and in fact I cannot remember her face, although I can remember the faces of the other girls I have just mentioned, but I remember what she said.
I had my little conversation I liked to have with all the girls before having sex with them (I was still doing my sociological studies, of course) so I asked her if it bothers her if it happens one night that all the customers pick other girls in the place and nobody picks her.
"Oh. It happens", she said. "And, you cry a lot, but you know what I say. I say, it doesn't matter if nobody picks me, because I am still a good person. You know, I say, Golda Meir wouldn't make it here, but she is still a good person."
This is the line I will never forget. A young girl (who was obviously Jewish) working in a whore house, said, "Golda Meir wouldn't make it here, but she is still a good person."
Golda Meir was the former Prime Minister of Israel at the time. She was an elderly lady with a somewhat grotesque appearance. "But she was still a good person."
This brief shining moment where these houses of prostitution operated openly in New York City lasted only about six months. Finally, they were all closed down, not for prostitution, but for building code violations. All of them had constructed interior cubicles for the girls to service their customers. Since they had not been granted the required construction permits, the City was able to close them down.
I was upset that my bevy of beautiful young girls had been put out of business, so I filed a motion in New York State Supreme Court to have the Derby Club reopened. In the motion papers which I filed in State Supreme Court, I alleged that I had been all over to the world and that by far the best whorehouse with the most beautiful girls I had found anywhere in the world was the Derby Club located on 47th Street near Sixth Avenue. I contended that by closing the Derby Club, my constitutional rights to have sex with a woman had been violated.
The name of the case was Walsh vs. Whitetop Realty. You can look it up in the State Supreme Courthouse at 60 Centre Street, New York New York.
My motion was denied, however, and the Derby Club never reopened.
Once again, these girls were not nymphomaniacs. Far from it.
Why did they do it, then?
In my opinion, these were average, normal girls. Most of them were beautiful, but they had to be, because of the competition. There were dozens of these whorehouses in Manhattan and thousands of these girls working. I am sure that they predominantly were lesbians, but I see nothing wrong with that. They were almost without exception nice people, with pleasant personalities.
I believe that they did it for the money, the excitement and the adventure. Men do dangerous things just for the fun of it, like go sky diving or mountain climbing. Why does a man climb a mountain? Because it is there. Why does a woman have sex with three partners at once or with 35 men on the average night? Because she knows that it is dangerous. She knows that she might even be beaten or killed, not to mention the other dangers, such as disease, disfigurement, etc. I suspect that many of the girls who I met at these places in 1976 are now dead.
If any of them are online and read this, I hope that they will contact me.
Returning to the original subject, I believe that there really is no such thing as nymphomania, but that some women do the kind of things that nymphomaniacs are said to do, not because of an overpowering craving for sex, but because they are action freaks who crave excitement and who want to do things exciting and adventurous.

Although I heartily disagree with some of your opinions, I do agree about your opinion about Nymphos. I was one of those girls in high school. Raised around a great deal of pornography, I thought it was no big deal to screw lots of men - and I did. I thought I would come like the girls in the mags. I never got off. Each guy represented an opportunity for orgasm. They failed me. Now I know that it was me that had the problem - I need intimacy in order to come. I thought the porn mags were right about sex - that it was best in groups. That is not the case. I have a wonderful older man who has brought me to orgasm many times. He has increased my interest in men a great deal, yet I never forget my first love - lesbian sex. There is nothing that can compare to the touch of a gentle, beautiful woman.
